While at the premiere of their newest movie, directing duo Joe and Anthony Russo teased that their return to the MCU with AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY will surprise all fans of the franchise.

“I think we’re always looking for new faces because there’s always new stories to tell,” Joe told The Hollywood Reporter. “I think these movies are going to be a surprise to people — we found a way into the story that’s very exciting to us but we think very radical and I think it’s going to challenge audiences.”

The Russo brothers are no strangers to the MCU, directing the previous two AVENGERS movies: AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and AVENGERS: ENDGAME. However, since wrapping up the era of the original heroes, they brothers have stepped away from the franchise, focusing on other projects. In the meantime, the popularity of Marvel’s stories has sharply dropped, partially due to superhero fatigue combined with a decline in quality. The return of the Russo brothers, however, has many excited as fans believe they could create another masterpiece that helps revive the series.

AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY is still over a year away, slated to release in May 2026, but some details about the movie are already known. At Comic Con 2024, it was revealed that Robert Downey Jr. will return to the MCU in a new role, taking up Dr. Doom. Downey Jr. was previously the face of the franchise for a decade as Tony Stark/Iron Man.

Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU has some fans speculating that his version of Dr. Doom will arise from an evil multiverse version of Tony Stark who became a villain rather than Iron Man. If this were the case, it would open the door for the franchise to reintroduce other past heroes as evil-multiverse versions of themselves, potentially pitting the new Avengers team against the old one.

“That four-movie run was incredible. And it left us really spent, with all of our emotions in the floor,” Anthony Russo said at Comic Con while discussing his return to the franchise. “In the time since, through a very special story, Joe and I have come to potentially see a road forward with you all.”

The Russo Brothers are also signed on to direct the followup AVENGERS movie, AVENGERS: SECRET WAR, which is set to release May 7, 2027.
