Amazon Introduces Reasoning AI Model—Do OpenAI and Anthropic Have a New Competitor?
Movieguide® Contributor
Amazon is launching an artificial intelligence model that offers complex thinking and “advanced reasoning” capabilities.
The model, called Amazon Nova Premier, is scheduled to come out in June under Amazon’s Nova AI brand. The model will display “hybrid reasoning” that offers complex thinking in a single system with fast replies, per Business Insider.
Reasoning models take a formulaic approach to answering questions, which makes them more credible in areas of math and science.
Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, and DeepSeek are a few companies who’ve recently made reasoning models, but Amazon says its model will be more inexpensive. The company boasts that its Nova models are at least 75% less expensive than third-party models on its Bedrock AI platform. Amazon also wants it to have its model ranked in the top 5 for performance, considering math skills, SWE, Berkeley Function Calling Leaderboard, AIME, and others, as well as software development.

Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet uses a similar hybrid system to Nova Premier. Amazon has invested $8 billion into Anthropic, and the two companies collaborated in the development of chips and cloud computing.
Nova Premier is one of six new Amazon Nova AI platforms. The other models include Nova Micro, a low-cost text-only model; Nova Lite, a fast, low-cost multimodal model for image, video, and text inputs; Nova Pro, an advanced, fast and accurate multimodal model for a broad variety of tasks; Nova Canvas, an image generation model; and Nova Reel, a video generation model.
“Inside Amazon, we have about 1,000 Gen AI applications in motion, and we’ve had a bird’s-eye view of what application builders are still grappling with,” said Rohit Prasad, SVP of Amazon Artificial General Intelligence. “Our new Amazon Nova models are intended to help with these challenges for internal and external builders, and provide compelling intelligence and content generation while also delivering meaningful progress on latency, cost-effectiveness, customization, information grounding, and agentic capabilities.”
