Why Do First Responders Run Toward Danger? Country Star Says It’s in Their DNA

Country singer and army reservist Craig Morgan says heroism is in first responders and military members’ DNA.

“I will tell you, anybody that’s been in the military, law enforcement, any former service-oriented [person], there’s something in our DNA that requires us to act,” he told Fox News.

Morgan recalled a story about his son Jerry who, as a child, spotted a house on fire and demanded Morgan stop the car they were in so they could go and help.

“It was him who had seen the smoke and said, ‘Dad, turn around.’ I didn’t even see it at first. He said, ‘Turn around,’” he shared. “So he already had that in his DNA as well…and he was ready to go in with me, as a young child. He was ready to run into that house.”

Morgan added, “My oldest son Kyle, to this day will not pass a place where he sees someone that may be in need.”

“We don’t do those things…for badges and ribbons and pats on the back and to talk about it,” he continued. “We do it because we think it’s the right thing and we’re supposed to do it. The only reason I ever talk about it is because there are a ton of men and women out there who do it for that reason. They don’t get any attention. So, when you see those men and women in uniform, whatever the uniform may be…it’s okay to say thank you to them for their service.”

Morgan enlisted in the military in 1989, serving for 10 years before leaving active service to pursue his burgeoning music career. He remained in the reserves for another seven years after that.

In 2023, Morgan re-enlisted in the Army Reserve, holding his swearing-in ceremony at the Grand Ole Opry.

“I stepped away from the military for a while to dedicate more time, effort and energy and resources to the music,” he told Fox News. “And then I got to a point in that career where I was able to go back. And so, to be able to do that and remarry both of those lives, my music and my military on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry was a very special thing.”

Morgan recently released a new EP, American Soundtrack, that explores the singer’s love of faith, family, and America.

“My platform has always been God, family, and country — always,” he explained in an interview with Muscle & Fitness. “Those are the three most important things in my life, and I always resort to those elements in my music.”
