What This Christian Singer’s Life Story Teaches Us About Having Faith

Tauren Wells’ journey as a musician and pastor was what God had “planned all along.”

“It’s difficult when you don’t see the future, but that’s what faith is for. Faith is not some fragile thing that breaks when you go through something hard,” he said in a video for K-LOVE.

Wells shared that his faith journey began after his father went on a “spiritual journey to discover his faith.” One day, he brought the family to church, which “changed the trajectory of my entire life.”

At church, Wells discovered a passion for music, explaining, “God had given me something I could use for His glory to minister to His people.”

Wells attended Bible college, majoring in theology and minoring in music. He started a band and quickly found success but decided to prioritize his faith and make it central to his music.

“If God decides to allow my music to transcend this space, then I’m here for that. But I’m not chasing that,” he explained.

Wells eventually left the band and signed a deal as a solo artist but soon began to feel a new calling.

“It was actually when I signed my solo deal in 2016 that I also had a new dream materialize in my heart,” he said, sharing his dream of starting a church.

It took awhile for his dream to come to fruition, but Wells launched the Church of Whitestone in 2023.

“A lot of times, when God gives us a vision, we think we have to do it immediately, and I think that instant obedience is a good quality to have,” he said. “But God does so much more over time than He tends to do overnight.”

Wells added, “We have walked through tremendous difficulties and so many question marks and uncertainties, but on the other side of that, there’s always, like, ‘Wow, God, this is what You had planned all along.’”

In an interview with Crosswalk, Wells spoke further about the calling he felt to minister to others.

“I was 20 years old when I feel like God first put in my heart the dream to galvanize people around the vision of the local church, to elevate the gospel, to bring people into their purpose, and to send them out to do what they’ve been uniquely designed to do,” he said. “So I’ve just been exploring different ways to do that all along.”

Wells continued, “God crystallized it in our heart very early on that we wanted to help people discover their God-authored identity through wholehearted relationship with Jesus…Honestly, we’ve just been waiting for the right time.”

Wells is also still hard at work on new music. He just announced the release of a new EP, Let The Church Sing.

“When people hear this new music, I want them to walk away thinking about how amazing the church is,” he told Music Row. “I hope that we can re-engage with the wonder and beauty of community and faith. I’m still the same child of God, but with a sharpened focus on what He has called me to do in the world.”
