How One NFL Quarterback Describes His Faith to Teammates: ‘Unbelievable’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield explained how he would describe his faith if asked by a teammate who Jesus is.

“Jesus is, obviously, the Son of God but is grace, is perfection, is someone that sacrificed everything, that gave us this opportunity to live life,” Mayfield told reporters. “For me, when you say He’s your Lord and Savior, you proclaim it whenever you can. He’s the reason we’re here.”

“And the story of Jesus, walking among the flesh, the only perfect man and to be sacrificed on the cross [where He] died for our sins, forever. When you accept that grace, it’s an unbelievable feeling,” Mayfield continued. “And then you dive into the word and you see stories and the scripture backs up what [it’s] saying. Whatever you go through, there’s always scripture that can help you out, and it’s been written. It’s the truth.”

NFL Transition

While Baker Mayfield has always been open and honest about his faith, he recently revealed how God used failure in his career to turn him back to the things that matter rather than focusing on the fleeting things of this world.

“[God] had to take my career down to the studs and make me realize I am more than a football player,” Mayfield told Bucs Nation when discussing his rocky transition from college to the NFL. “There’s much more going on than the game of football. For me to see that, I had to hit rock bottom.”

Unfortunately, this rock bottom extended beyond just football as his marriage was crumbling and he experienced a high-profile arrest for public intoxication. However, this extreme low helped him turn him back to the Lord, and his life is now back on track, as is his faith.

“God’s timing is perfect…It’s been such a special ride to let God take us through that. God gave me the ability to try and lead and do that as best as I possibly can, and that’s when I realized it’s not about the stats or anything on the field,” Mayfield explained, per the Christian Post. “It’s about how I carry myself, how I inspire others and try to bring people together and create a culture that allows you to be yourself and the best version of that, whatever that looks like.”

Faith is prevalent throughout the NFL, and Mayfield is one of many quarterbacks who are open about their faith and use their platform to share the Gospel with their fans.
