After the success of A MINECRAFT MOVIE, it seems only natural that Roblox would follow suit, but the path to a Roblox movie hitting theaters is not so simple.
“We don’t have plans to share at this time about how we might use our IP in the future,” a Roblox representative told The Hollywood Reporter when asked about the possibility of a movie in the future.
While this answer is not a definitive no, Roblox is also not jumping to announce a movie. This is slightly surprising given the massive success A MINECRAFT MOVIE has found, blowing past its pre-release estimates to a current international box office gross of over $343 million. While adapting Minecraft for the big screen was no easy task given that it has little to no plot, Roblox would be even more difficult to piece together into one cohesive story.

More than anything, Roblox is a creation tool which allows users to create their own games and experiences. Unlike Minecraft, there is no world to explore or experience to be had that was not hand built by users. Thus, there is no definitive Roblox experience that all players who boot up the game will have in the same way there is for Minecraft.
Nonetheless, if filmmakers attempted to pull off a Roblox movie, it would likely be a major hit given that its largest demographic is kids and young teenagers — compared to Minecraft, whose average player is 24 years old. If the movie were family-friendly, it would draw millions of families in the same way A MINECRAFT MOVIE has. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

While the adaptation of games like Minecraft and Roblox would have seemed absurd only a few years ago, the interest in turning them into movies highlights the ever growing power of established IP. More and more, studios are desperate to produce guaranteed hits, rather than taking a risk on a new story.
For this reason, the industry continues to go all in on sequels to popular movies — resulting in SHREK 5, TOY STORY 5, FROZEN 3 and more — and the adaptation of IP established in other realms. Barbie is another example of a household name that did not logically need a movie, however, BARBIE ended up as the No. 1 movie of 2023, closely trailed by THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE.
Given the industry’s desire to play it safe, it only seems like a matter of time before Roblox gets adapted for the big screen and cashes in on its massive audience.
