While some celebrities choose to live in the glitz and glam of Hollywood, others flock to a more peaceful and slower paced life, including actor Josh Duhamel.
The RANSOM CANYON actor lives in Minnesota and opened up about his quiet life in a discussion with Parade.
“Part of the reason I built my place out in Minnesota, deep in the woods, is it’s removed from everything. The closest store is 40 miles away,” he said.
He explained that in such a quiet and secluded location, the everyday priority is relationships.
“Once we get there, it’s really about everybody taking care of each other,” he said. “Making memories, spending time with family and friends. You really get a chance to get back to the basics.”
He continued, “You’re not consumed by all these other distractions. When you’re out there, it’s really about having fun, making sure everybody’s warm, everybody’s got food and water.”
Duhamel has two children: Shepherd, 1, whom he shares with his wife Audra Mari, and Axl, 11, whom he shared with ex-wife Fergie.
The actor takes pride the lifestyle he creates for his family.
“My son is going to have memories of this place forever,” he added. “He’s not on his iPad when he’s out there. He’s out there in the boat with me, or he’s playing soccer on the beach, or he’s out there in the woods doing whatever I’m doing. And then I have a little baby who’s going to experience the same thing.”
Josh Duhamel decision to give his kids a life away from screens is encouraging as the American Academy of Pediatrics says “There continues to be evidence of harm from excessive digital media use.”
Other celebrities have abandoned Hollywood and are aiming for a simpler life, including LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE actress Melissa Gilbert.
“I had to get out of there [L.A.], because it felt like I was not being authentically myself.” she said. “In the five years that I was in Michigan, all of that stopped…I stopped everything and just focused on being as physically and emotionally healthy as I could.”
Matthew McConaughey also left LA to settle into a slower-paced life. He explained, “Ritual came back. Whether that was Sunday church, sports, dinner together as a family every night, or staying up after that telling stories in the kitchen, sitting at the island pouring drinks and nibbling while retelling them all in different ways than we told them before.”
