More Detail:

THE CHOSEN:  LAST SUPPER – PART THREE 3 is the final theatrical installment to Season 5 of the popular series on the life of Jesus Christ, taken from the New Testament documents. Jesus has a table prepared for His Apostles to celebrate Passover, which will be His Last Supper. Meanwhile, both the Chief Priests and the Romans plot the demise of Jesus. The Apostles are too overwhelmed with their own humanity to comprehend what Jesus tells them, or to help him at all. PART THREE has some scary images and violence, along with extremely sad story elements. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger children.

Jesus continues to show patience toward His flawed Apostles. He has a good sense of humor whenever they worry about provisions or being in line with Jewish Law. This time the Apostles worry they will not have a suitable kosher place to have a Passover dinner in order to be acceptable to Jewish Law. Of course, Jesus has already prepared the way.

As the Apostles make their way to the Upper Room prepared for them, they each remember the circumstances they were in when Jesus found them. In a series of flashbacks, each Apostle comes to terms with their humanity. The Apostle Judas Iscariot can’t handle the circumstances of his humanity. He neither prays nor seeks consolation. Instead, he becomes an instrument of betrayal.

Meanwhile, Jesus seems to be upsetting the leaders as He challenges both Jewish and Roman authorities wherever he goes. The authorities retaliate by plotting His trial and condemnation. This takes great deviance because many in Jerusalem and surrounding areas believe and follow Jesus as the Messiah. Caiaphas and Pontius Pilate lead the unholy alliance between the Romans and the Jewish leaders. First, they must destroy the reputation of Jesus. They hire thugs and thieves to discredit Jesus and spread rumors among the people. They plan secret and unlawful meetings to arrest Jesus with the intent to condemn Him before anyone can object.

However, Nicodemus, a well-respected Jewish leader, investigates Jesus. He sends a spy to observe Him and compares the information he receives about Jesus to Scripture. His findings lead him to believe Jesus is the promised Messiah.

Does anyone care about the truth? Is this enough to stop the murder of the only begotten Son of God?

THE CHOSEN:  LAST SUPPER – PART THREE brings viewers up to the arrest of Jesus Christ by Roman guards. This last installment does its best to include the whole story. However, it does so in a non-linear, incongruent style. This makes it feel a little drawn out and overstated. Also, for example, the creators miss an opportunity to convey the full suffering of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. That said, these issues seem due to the fact that PART THREE isn’t actually a movie, but rather three episodes from an episodic series.

THE CHOSEN:  LAST SUPPER – PART THREE does a good job showing the fear of Jesus and some resistance, which is understandable given the magnitude of what He knows will transpire in the days ahead. Jesus knows why He has come into the world and is zealous to save every one who comes to Him. He shows this in every action in the New Testament account. However, His full suffering, which is not yet revealed at this point in THE CHOSEN, is the fact that in order to save us, Jesus must take on all the sins of humanity throughout all time. This awful reality contrasts with the perfection, divinity, purity, and goodness of Jesus Christ creates a tremendous suffering and paradox. Jesus pays the debt in full for the offenses of all those who believe in Him so that His followers can be made righteous enough to enter Heaven. Nevertheless, the movie does a good job sticking mostly to the Scriptural accounts. Jesus is referred to as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. He fulfills the Old Covenant and creates the New Covenant of salvation for a humanity that is lost without Jesus. THE CHOSEN:  LAST SUPPER – PART THREE continues to retell the story of Jesus Christ, the greatest story ever told, with strong performances and in a visually attractive way, and for this we are grateful.
