YouTube is introducing a new free AI tool that generates music for content creators.
The feature allows users to “create custom instrumentals through the help of AI,” YouTube said in a video on April 8.
Creators don’t need to worry about copyright, per The Verge. The tool, called Music assistant, allows users to enter prompts like, “give me uplifting and motivational music for a workout montage.” After processing the prompt, the tool provides several options for the creator to download and use.
YouTube is gradually implementing the plan for Creator Music users, who will see a new “Music Assistant” tab inside the Creator Music Tab. The tool is similar to Stability AI’s model that creates background audio and Meta’s open-source Audiocraft and MusicGen, which also generate music after receiving a prompt.
Musicradar pointed out that this new tool eliminates creators’ need for a musician or editor. Because the music is automatically matched to a video, an editor’s job is nearly done.
YouTube also has an AI music remixer that allows users to “restyle” songs for Shorts. Its AI tool, Dream Track, powered by DeepMind’s Lyria, lets users hum songs and turn them into music tracks in the style of specific artists.
Beat matching for Shorts works the other way around as Music assist. It takes a song the user picks and then edits the user-selected videos and pictures to match the song.

“When you select multiple photos and video clips from your phone’s gallery, you’ll now have the option to automatically create a short video synced to music. Just choose the media, pick a song, and it’ll arrange your clips to match the beat,” said YouTube.
The new tool is yet another of YouTube’s efforts to make things easier for its content creators, emphasized by the fact that it’s a completely free tool. But as YouTube is starting a gradual rollout, not all users will get access right away, as reported by DMR News.
The new tool may give companies who sell music to content creators a run for their money. One such company, Epidemic Sound, just reported having significant financial growth last year with a 29% year-over-year increase. Its revenue reached upwards of $181 million, according to Music Business Worldwide.
The Swedish company boasts that videos with its music have over 3 billion views across YouTube and TikTok daily, half a billion more than in 2023. However, YouTube’s set of music tools may put a hasty stop to that momentum.
