Roma Downey wants viewers of 2014’s SON OF GOD to “fall in love with Jesus” and His story.
“Our hope is just that we reach as many people with the extraordinary story of love. We know that when hearts are open, grace can move in,” she told Movieguide® in a 2014 interview.
Downey, who executive produced the movie and stars as Mary, continued, “I think there’s such an opportunity here for believers to come and fall in love with Jesus all over again and for people that don’t know the story to discover Jesus and fall in love with Him.”
SON OF GOD tells the story of Jesus’ life. The movie made over $70 million at the global box office, and Movieguide® praised SON OF GOD for its “captivating showcase of God’s grace,” as well as being “a glorious reminder of God’s love.”
“The church reaction has been amazing, across denominations,” producer Mark Burnett added.
Downey shared that the movie’s crew “just prayed our way through the experience.”
“We know that God doesn’t always call the qualified, but He always qualifies the called, and it’s been just an extraordinary journey,” she concluded.

In a personal essay Downey wrote for Sojourners, the actress explained, “For our movie, SON OF GOD, I wanted all of the focus to be on Jesus. I want his name to be on the lips of everyone who sees this movie.”
She and actor Diogo Morgado, who played Jesus, spoke to CBN about their own relationships with Jesus.
“To me, He is love, He’s a pure love,” Morgado explained. “I think the more you describe it, the more you get confused by it. I think a lot of misinterpretations of Jesus were because of that. Ultimately, He is the purest form of love, for me.”
Downey shared, “I have loved Jesus my whole life. I was so grateful when I was a little girl for my faith because my mother died when I was just 10…He’s carried me through a lot, and I’m indebted to Him for the transformation that He brought into my life. And it’s been just such a privilege to be able to bring a story to the screen, knowing that in some way the film will impact the lives of millions of people that they too will get to know His story and have an opportunity to fall in love with Him.”
As we prepare to celebrate this Easter holiday, SON OF GOD is an excellent reminder of the sacrifice Jesus made for us as well as God’s great love for humanity.
