HGTV’s ROCK THE BLOCK just returned for its sixth season on April 14, and host Ty Pennington reflected on his career in home renovation in a discussion with TV Insider.
The outlet called Pennington the “godfather” of the home renovation genre.
“I would have never thought I would be a godfather of anything. I’ve always been the adolescent one,” he joked. “It’s funny. I’ve been doing this for 25 years. Isn’t that crazy?”
He explained that he loves sharing his knowledge and lending advice to those on the show.
“I try to help out whenever I can verbally. I can also see when things take a tough turn and try to give a word of advice,” Pennington said. “In the end it comes down to the teams and individuals, and them working together and knowing their strengths and weaknesses like we do in real life. I still love it.”
Pennington also opened up about his relationship with his wife Kellie Merrell, whom he married in 2021, and mentioned how he’s grateful for a stable relationship after traveling so much for work.
“Honestly, I was on the road so much I couldn’t even keep a plant alive much less a relationship. I’m actually in a great place in my life. I’m happy with someone who I love and has a great sense of humor,” he shared.
For this new season of ROCK THE BLOCK, the judges will be “blind” and have no idea who completed which renovation. Pennington reflected, “I think blind judging was a great way to go. I think you really get more honest, verbal explanations of what the judge thinks because they have no idea who created it. One thing the judges do is not miss a detail.”
HGTV summarized Monday’s episode: “Two teams of Rock the Block veterans and two teams of first-time rookies create gorgeous kitchens and living rooms as the ultimate renovation competition begins.”

For the season premiere episode, teams worked together to transform spaces. HGTV took to Instagram to reveal each team’s designs and asked fans to share their favorites.

One user responded, “I like Jonathan’s best. It’s warm, tasteful, and has a wonderful calm vibe.” Another person chimed in, “The Kamala’s! Love their design and style. Plus, what was overlooked was how they made the balcony perfect for entertaining with the kitchen window and large slider.”
