DIRECTV’s free streaming service just added eight new NBC channels, from news and sports to reality TV.

“DIRECTV continues to offer more choice, flexibility and control to consumers, matching the content they want to watch with how they want to watch it, and if ‘free’ is your thing, then you can enjoy more than 100 channels at no cost with MyFree DIRECTV,” Kent Rees, General Manager for MyFree DIRECTV, said in a statement.

Rees continued, “NBCU’s portfolio is a terrific addition to the lineup of 100+ FAST channels available through MyFree DIRECTV, which spans all the most popular programming genres and connects deeply devoted fans to their favorite programming at no cost.”

“DIRECTV is a valued distribution partner, and we are thrilled to offer NBCUniversal’s desirable library of content to MyFree DIRECTV, Genre Pack and Signature customers allowing us to reach new audiences,” Amy Geary, SVP, Platform Distribution and Partnerships, added

MyFree DIRECTV was launched last year, giving customers access to dozens of FAST channels.

“DirecTV envisions a brighter TV future that offers consumers quality content with more choice and more control at the right value. The launch of MyFree DirecTV will do just that,” Amy Leifer, chief advertising sales officer at DirecTV Advertising, said in a statement. “We’re laser-focused on strengthening our investment in this area as we empower our advertising clients to reach new audiences with targeted and contextual solutions and innovative ad formats.”

DIRECTV recently made another move to entice viewers to ditch its streaming services in favor of traditional TV. The company announced new Genre Packs that will allow customers to pick and choose what they want to watch.

“At DIRECTV, we’re breaking up with the one-size-fits-all bloated cable bundles of the past by delivering new ways for consumers to enjoy the content they love at the best value,” said Vince Torres, chief marketing officer at DIRECTV. “Our new Genre Packs and Mini-Packs provide lower-priced options, allowing customers to pick and choose what they want to watch and when they want to watch it.”

It’s too soon to tell if DIRECTV’s moves to tailor traditional TV to the individual viewer’s wants will have a significant effect on its numbers, but it looks like the company isn’t ready to throw in the towel in the fight against the streamers.
