CBS has announced that Tom Ellis will star in the new FBI spinoff series titled CIA.
“CIA is a one-hour crime drama centered on two unlikely partners — a fast-talking, rule-breaking loose cannon CIA case officer (Ellis), and a by-the-book, seasoned and smart FBI agent who believes in the rule of law,” CIA’s synopsis reads, per Variety. “When this odd couple are assigned to work out of CIA’s New York Station, they must learn to work together to investigate cases and criminals posing threats on U.S. soil, finding that their differences may actually be their strength.”
Ellis shared the news on his Instagram with a screenshot from Deadline that reads, “FBI Offshoot CIA Starring Tom Ellis Ordered Straight-To-Series By CBS For 2025-26 Season.”
“Very excited for the next chapter of life working with @dickwolf and @cbstv 😊,” the actor wrote in the caption.
The new spinoff series will be written by Dick Wolf and directed by FBI: MOST WANTED’s David Hudgins. Both will also be executive producers, as well as Nicole Perlman, David Chasteen and Peter Jankowski.
CIA joins other CBS offshoot series including BLUE BLOODS offshoot BOSTON BLUE and FIRE COUNRY spinoff SHERIFF COUNTRY.
Aside from his time in front of the camera, Ellis is an ambassador for the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.
He helps the charity fund patients, bring support to the family and staff, provide “cutting-edge medical equipment” and build and refurbish “child-centered facilities,” the charity’s website explains.

Ellis also helped the SoCal Fire Fund to help rebuild what was lost in the LA fires.
“The #lafires have been devastating for so many of my friends. An astonishing amount of people have lost everything and the pain in my home city is as palpable as the smoke that fills it,” Ellis wrote in a post on his Instagram. “If you are looking to help or donate then @caafoundation alongside their partners @coreresponse @eifoundation @lausd are proud to launch the SoCal Fire Fund, aimed at providing immediate and long-term support for community-centered recovery initiatives that aid students, individuals, and families impacted by the current fires.
“This fund is focused on providing flexible funding assistance for immediate needs, case management to help navigate government and local services, as well as educational and well-being resources,” he concluded.
While no official release date has been released for CIA, FBI fans will surely love the new series as Ellis’ character learns to overcome his differences to keep the United States safe.
