Brothers Johnny and Donnie Van Zant — members of Lynyrd Skynyrd and .38 Special, respectively — teamed up to create a Christian album after both felt like God was calling them to do so.
“We just said, ‘You know what? God’s putting it on us to do this,’” Johnny said.
“We just told each other, if we could just bring one person to Christ, it would be worth this whole project, really,” Donnie added. “And I think we’ve done that a lot over — to the glory of God. He gets the glory.”
“We’ve got a bucket list of things that we want to do musically together, and right at the top of that list was to do a Christian record,” Donnie continued.
The duo released the album, Always Look Up, last November, and the songs have been played tens of thousands of times on Spotify since its release. Though the brothers are not particularly known for their Christian music, faith has been a major part of their lives for as long as they can remember. Their father was a devout Christ follower and instilled a love for God within his sons at a young age.
“We’re really proud to love Jesus,” Johnny previously said. “We’re proud to say that we’re Christians. We’re like everybody else, we had our dark sides, our really bad sides. But I think as you go through these storms in your life, you know what? You really realize how much you need Jesus. And you really have to lan on that cross. And you know what? He wants us to come to Him. And if you ask, you shall receive.”
The Van Zant brothers aren’t the only rock stars using their platform to share the Gospel. Korn guitarist Brian Welch is also sharing the Lord with a new crowd as he spreads the Gospel while continuing to perform with his band.
“I’ve checked and double-checked and confirmed and quadruple-confirmed that I’m supposed to be there,” Welch told Church Leaders of his position with Korn. “So I don’t care what anybody says. God just puts his hand on it and I just see Him all the time. So that’s all I’m focused on.”
“[Our music is] crazy, but mainly the lyrics are about pain,” Welch explained. “And they’re coming from a real and raw place. People need hope. There’s addictions like crazy in that world. There’s depression. It’s been a lot of suicide stories happening. What better place [for me] to be, having the meaning of life that I carry? You know, I know the answer for the meaning of life.”
It is amazing to see how God can use anyone to spread his light and how those with a major platform to reach non-Christians are using their influence to turn their fans towards Christ.
