Country artist Drew Baldridge joined Matthew West’s podcast to talk about how his faith in God led him to pursue a music career.
Baldridge led worship with his father at their church, which then turned into “a little quartet and traveling and singing.”
“I just loved that so much — like driving in my truck with my dad. It was all cathedrals. You know, my dad loved the cathedrals and just that kind of vocal group kind of thing. And so I started doing that with them,” he said.
Baldridge soon found himself “singing Sundays at local churches, and Fridays and Saturdays, I’d play in bars — country music.”
That’s when some people in the quartet told Baldridge, “You got to make a decision if you’re going to sing for God or if you’re going to sing in bars.”
In defense of his son, Baldridge’s father nearly quit the quartet.
But a piece of advice from a preacher Baldridge still looks up to today marked a “really big turning point” in his life.
“All I’m going to tell you is that Jesus just wasn’t in the church. He was with the taxpayers, He was with everyone outside the four walls,” the preacher told the singer. “Be a light wherever that is that you go. If you want to go sing, wherever you want to sing at, you shine His light and it’s for His glory.”
At that moment, Baldridge knew what his life purpose was. He decided to pursue a career in country music.
“I love country music because I grew up in the country. And for me, some country songs that talk about God hit home with me more than praise and worship,” Baldridge explained.

One of his hits, “She’s Somebody’s Daughter,” is one of those songs that bring God and country music together.
“It’s not only God — you know, she’s not only her dad’s daughter, she’s also God’s daughter. You know, treat her right,” Baldridge told West.
Baldridge’s latest hit is “Tough People,” a track that is “honest” and “real.”
“It’s what our world’s going through. It’s what we’re all feeling,” Baldridge told Billboard. “Don’t give up. Don’t stop loving people, don’t stop helping people out. What you’re going through, you’re gonna come out better because of it. I think that’s the message that we want to share.”
Baldridge has always loved to sing, and whether that was in the quartet with his father or in the bars with his guitar, he’s trusted that God will use him right where He’s placed him.
