A LifeWay Research study found that 27% of Americans agree with the statement, “I believe it is possible to communicate with someone after they are dead.” However, among those who agree, only 8% strongly agree. Meanwhile, 55% disagree with the statement, including 39% who strongly disagree, while 18% don’t know.
It is difficult to tell from these statistics how many of those Americans who think such communication is possible have actually attempted it, but we may hope and pray very few. Trying to contact the dead through mediums is one of the most strongly forbidden acts in Scripture: “Do not turn to mediums or spiritists; do not seek them out to be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God.” Lev. 19:31.
