Jackie O’Neal, an ordained Episcopal priest and journalist, writes that fatherless single mothers on welfare have spiritual and mental health issues requiring counseling, not just job training.
“Single mothers are more likely to have substance use and psychiatric disorders than women in the general population,” she writes. “The problem. . . has its roots in a girl’s relationship with her father which provides a blueprint for all other relationships with men and with the outside world. . . . If a girl grew up as a fatherless child, she is likely to experience some measure of depression.”
A fatherless woman finding herself struggling as a single mother could also hold a grudge against God, O’Neal adds.
