Washington, D.C. – Obama administration officials told the Senate Armed Services Committee on July 7 that they plan to give some constitutional rights, including the adoption of the exclusionary rule against evidence obtained through coercion, to the 229 alleged foreign terrorists detained at Guantanamo, the US naval base in southern Cuba.
Republican Senator John McCain of Ariz. opposes the plan.
“I did not know, nor know, of any time in American history where enemy combatants were given rights under the United States Constitution,” McCain said.
McCain has proposed new rules that would make the procedures for the military trials of the Gitmo detainees resemble courts-martial.
