The number of Muslims in Great Britain increased 26.3% from 2004 to 2008, from 1.9 million to 2.4 million, but the number of Christians actually decreased 4.5% during that period, from 44.6 million to 42.6 million.
Peter Hitchens, a journalist and broadcaster, believes this means that Britain “could soon become a Muslim country.”
“Christianity in this country is too feeble,” Hitchens added.
His comments echo those of The Right Reverend Paul Richardson, Assistant Bishop of Newcastle, who said that declining church attendance and the rise in multiculturalism in Britain means that “Christian Britain is dead.”
Alison Ruoff, an evangelical lay member of the Church of England, agrees that Britain is “sleepwalking” into an Islamic state.
“Christians are now being persecuted for wearing a Christian symbol,” she noted. “You can wear the veil as a Muslim, but you can’t wear a cross. The whole thing is ludicrous and needs turning on its head. The Church needs to say, ‘No, we are Christians and this is a Christian society.'”
