BABE is a delightful family movie full of biblical lessons. Farmer Hogget wins a piglet named Babe at the county fair, intending to fatten him up to be Christmas dinner. He soon realizes that he’s not dealing with an ordinary pig. Babe learns to herd sheep with the guidance of a nurturing border collie.
The other animals on the farm aren’t sure about a pig who challenges social norms, especially the lead sheepdog, Rex. Babe must learn to find his place in the world. While it’s a wholesome story (with the bonus of talking animals), we can find many lessons within the plot. The Lord uses all things to reach His followers, even a talking pig. Let’s explore what believers can take away from BABE.
God Has A Purpose For Your Life
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28
Every animal on the farm serves a purpose. The cows are for milking, the sheep provide wool and the dogs herd the sheep. Dutchess the Cat points out that animals that don’t have a purpose become dinner. Babe knows he has a higher calling. After being adopted by Farmer Hogget’s border collies, Rex and Fly, he decides to become a sheep herder.
Much like Babe, we all seek our purpose in life. It can be easy to feel lost in this world when we don’t know our place in it. Take comfort in knowing that God is a God of design. Romans 8:28 promises that He calls those who love Him to His purpose. The Lord reveals our gifts when we surrender to His will.
Determination Leads To Blessings
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9
Babe’s first attempt at herding the sheep doesn’t go smoothly. Not only do the sheep stay in place, but they laugh at him. There has never been a sheep-pig before, and no one believes that Babe can pull it off. His determination to keep going in the face of failure carries him to victory at the national sheepdog competition.
It’s challenging to stay the course when plans don’t go our way. Frustration often derails us from our goals. BABE encourages us to push through hardships, and Galatians 6:9 teaches that even though we may grow tired, God’s perfect timing unfolds when we persevere.
Live By The Golden Rule
“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 7:12
When it comes to life on the farm, Babe is kind to all of the animals. While the sheepdogs see the sheep as inferior, Babe knows their value and treats them respectfully, just as he wants to be treated. The film offers a powerful lesson on living by the Golden Rule.
Jesus says in Matthew 7:12 that we are to show our neighbors the same kindness that we would like. When we act with love for those around us, it reflects Christ’s love within us. What a beautiful way to share the Gospel with your neighbor simply by showing them compassion.
Find Confidence In The Lord
“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7
Babe isn’t discouraged when the animals around him are skeptical of him becoming a sheep-pig. He has the confidence to pursue his dream and achieve his goal through hard work and self-discipline. He doesn’t hide in fear but steps out with courage to ultimately win the competition.
While it’s nice to be self-assured, 2 Timothy 1:7 tells us that God gives His followers the spirit of power, love and motivation to accomplish their ambitions. When we seek validation in Him, he allows us to do great things for His honor. Claiming confidence in the Lord makes our achievements even more rewarding.
Lead With Humility
“Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight.” Romans 12:16
Babe also sets an example of the importance of humility in leadership. Fly the sheepdog instructs him to force the sheep into submission. While he did give it a go on his first try, he eventually won the sheep’s favor by humbling himself and listening with an empathetic ear. In turn, the herd assisted him in becoming the best sheep-pig.
God commands His people to live in harmony, as seen in Romans 12:6. One way to do this is to lead with a humble heart. Strong leaders respect the people around them and know that their wisdom comes from the Lord. Believers blessed with leadership positions should not consider themselves above those they lead.
BABE’s gentle story gives valuable lessons that kids and adults alike can learn from. With a prayerful attitude and determination, we can feel the satisfaction of accomplishing great things. In the famous words of Farmer Hogget, “That’ll do, pig, that’ll do.”
