7 Christian Celebrities Putting Intentional Effort into Their Marriages
By Tess Farrand, Staff Writer
Aside from putting your faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, marriage is one of, if not the most, important decision you can make. With this in mind, it’s encouraging to see these Christian entertainers striving to honor their spouses with intentional effort, given that divorce is so rampant in our culture, especially in the entertainment industry. Below are just a few examples….
- Hugh Jackman
Actor, singer and dancer Hugh Jackman and his wife Deborra-Lee Furness were married in 1996. A 23 year-long marriage is definitely long by Hollywood’s standards, and there are a few things that keep Jackman and Furness grounded despite busy work schedules. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Jackman said, “We’re really honest with each other, we talk about everything. Deb had a few rules when we met ‘cause she’d done a few movies. She said we won’t spend more than two weeks apart.” Another one of their rules for their marriage seems to come straight from Ephesians 4:26-27. Jackman continued, “We never go to bed on a cross word. Sometimes it’s 3 o’clock in the morning, but we kind of work it out before we go to sleep.”
2. Audrey Roloff (pictured above)
Audrey Roloff made her way to the public’s attention when she met her then-boyfriend, Jeremy Roloff, who starred on the reality TV show LITTLE PEOPLE BIG WORLD. The two Christians found their faith as an anchor for their relationship and were married in 2014. In 2016, Audrey and Jeremy went into business together, starting their own marriage blog community called Beating50Percent while still filming their show. In the fall of last year, the pair announced they would be leaving LITTLE PEOPLE BIG WORLD to focus on their growing family and marriage ministry. Audrey often comments on their marriage blog about how her faith in Jesus helps protect the sanctity of their marriage. “Spending alone time with God will help you to know His truth” she writes, “follow His ways, and love His people better. Inevitably, you will love your spouse more, and better.”
3. David Henrie
The Disney star from WIZARDS OF WAVERLY PLACE said he had a return to faith after landing a role in the movie LITTLE BOY, produced by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey. In an interview, he said the Holy Spirit took his heart from a very “agnostic place,” and turned his gaze back to the Gospel. In the years following this pivotal moment in his walk with God, the former Disney channel star married Maria Cahill in 2017. Henrie’s intentional affection for his bride often leads him to take to social media to express his love by quoting his wedding vows. The two also attend church together, making faith a foundational part of their marriage. On Instagram, he writes, “I love you till death do us part, through sickness and in health, for better or for worse….” Currently, the couple is expecting their first child together.
4. Tia Mowry-Hardrict
The childhood star turned lifestyle connoisseur, cookbook author and reality TV star is most recognizable for her role starring in SISTER SISTER opposite her real-life twin sister Tamera. Tia and husband Cory Hardrict dated for eight years before tying the knot in 2008. The star commented in an interview with ESSENCE magazine, “Cory is a man of faith and a man of God.” Seeing her husband’s faith, team-player mentality and leadership strengthened Tia’s confidence in her family instilling Christian values for their children. Tia and Cory celebrated 10 years of marriage in April of 2018, and Tia wrote her appreciation for her husband on social media right before the birth of their second child, “My biggest supporter, encourager, and peacemaker. Your strength and faith in me, inspires me.”
5. Justin Bieber
Singer and professing Christian Justin Bieber shocked fans worldwide when he announced his engagement to model Hailie Baldwin via Instagram. The two were secretly married in 2018 and are anticipating the joys of starting their own family as Bieber tries to model Jesus’ love of the church in his marriage. After Thanksgiving in 2018, Bieber posted his gratitude for his current season of life. “First thanksgiving as a married man, first time hosting thanksgiving. First time both sides of the family has come together. Relationships are hard and love isn’t always easy but thank you Jesus for showing me how!” Bieber profoundly finished by saying, “Every day is a learning process, trying to be more like him, patient, kind, selfless, boy I got a long way! But God’s grace is sufficient!” He’s also been spotted reading Timothy Keller’s Christian marriage book The Meaning of Marriage.
6. Korie Robertson
DUCK DYNASTY star, and wife of Willie Robertson, married after graduating high school. They raised their six children to follow after God while still being in the public-eye due to their wildly successful TV show. Although their down-to-earth demeanors led audiences worldwide to fall in love with their extended family, Korie knows that her marriage is of the utmost importance. She posted a touching reflection on Instagram reflecting this. Part of it reads, “thankful that we weathered all the storms to get where we are today, certain there will be more that we will weather. We’ve been married 26 years and still, there’s a lot we disagree on, we’re different people from different backgrounds with different thoughts and ideas that make us who we are, but there’s so much beauty there, so much to be gained from the differences.” She concluded, “true love isn’t always easy, but always worth it! I love you @realwilliebosshog#willieandkorie #dreamteam.”
*Update: Willie and Korie just celebrated their 27th anniversary of marriage on the same day as the birth of their first grandchild.
7. Denzel Washington
This veteran actor, who often speaks out about his faith, married his wife Pauletta in 1983. In 2010, Denzel spoke to The Guardian about his thoughts on marriage and the importance of a committed attitude to his spouse. “There is no secret to the perfect marriage.” He went on, “everybody has their ups and downs; we’ve had ours. It’s hard work, you know. But we made a commitment. A spiritual foundation helps everything – marriage, work, peace of mind.” The Washington’s have four grown children together.
