A MINECRAFT MOVIE continues to overperform at the box office and has now grossed over $700 million in three weeks in theaters, setting it up to cross over the $1 billion mark.

“It’s one of those things. There was an immense audience that was so passionate about the game and for when Minecraft was such a key part of their childhood adolescence, just something that they loved,” director Jared Hess told Deadline. “The game itself is so creative, but it’s also ridiculous and really funny and absurd in so many ways. That was so much of the appeal to me in adapting it.”

“I think one of the things that people are responding to is how dead serious the characters are taking this ridiculous world,” Hess added. “Jack [Black] is playing everything with so much passion. And when we were shooting, it’d be like, ‘You know what, Jack, let’s put a little more mustard on that.’ And he just takes everything to an 11, all the time. That absurd seriousness about such a ridiculous world is part of the vitality of the comedy. I think that is what people are celebrating.”

Riding on this creativity, A MINECRAFT MOVIE was an instant success, debuting to over $300 million at the global box office. Three weeks later, this success has continued, amounting to a total worldwide gross of $721 million and counting. While capturing what the world of Minecraft means to so many people, the movie also emphasizes the importance of friendship and the value of good fighting evil, two values that help draw families in. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

A MINECRAFT MOVIE is a funny, light-hearted tale with deep meaning. It has a strong redemptive, morally uplifting worldview where people find meaning, strength, love, and courage in friendship to fight evil. A once self-absorbed character risks his life to save his friend. The evil queen says to hope, dream and create is to suffer, but the hero rebukes her by telling her that cowards choose to destroy things because it’s easier. A MINECRAFT MOVIE has lots of action violence, some light foul and crude language, rude humor and some scary images. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children and young teenagers.

With video game adaptations being the hottest trend in Hollywood, it seems natural that the most popular game ever released would smash the box office. However, given Minecraft’s non-linear and minimal plot nature, the success of A MINECRAFT MOVIE was anything but guaranteed. THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE had a basic storyline from the games to adapt —  Bowser kidnaps Princess Peach and Mario works to save her — compared to Minecraft which empowers the players to develop their own stories with no plot for them to work through.

However, there are certain moments in a player’s playthrough of Minecraft that they will almost always experience, which the writers for the movie focused on highlighting to help viewers connect the movie with their own experience with the game.

“These moments like A MINECRAFT MOVIE are examples of respecting community, [and] making sure they feel respected and heard through the producest that we build,” Microsoft’s — who owns Minecraft — chief of gaming, Phil Spencer, told Variety. “We do it in gaming, but it’s something that the whole company aspires to be.”

As A MINECRAFT MOVIE continues its historic run, it serves as yet another example for Hollywood that the content audiences crave the most is family-friendly, morally sound movies that parents and kids can enjoy together.
