A THOUSAND TOMORROWS’ Karen Kingsbury Discusses New Series: ‘It’s Really Powerful’

By Movieguide® Contributor

New York Times bestselling author Karen Kingsbury recently sat down with Movieguide® to talk about A THOUSAND TOMORROWS, a new series from PureFlix.

A THOUSAND TOMORROWS is based on Kingsbury’s best-selling book of the same name.

The author revealed that she didn’t initially see it as a TV miniseries, saying, “This is not my longest novel, so to see it as six hours…it was kind of incredible.”

Kingsbury also praised Tyler Russell, the screenwriter behind the miniseries, calling him her “favorite” screenwriter.

“I really truly think he has such a knack for screenwriting and he’s so visual,” she explained. “So, the exciting thing to me was what he brought to it with the extra characters, new scenes, and more action to make it what it is today.”

Russell jumped in, adding that his goal was to make sure Kingsbury was “happy” with the adaptation and sharing that, once he finished an episode’s script, the pair would get together and read it through.

He also said that A THOUSAND TOMORROWS is really “resonating” with viewers.

“It’s a really powerful show and we’re really thankful,” Russell continued.

Kingsbury chalked the show’s success up to it’s storylines about “real” things, such as family relationships, sickness, and faith.

So, could there be a second season of A THOUSAND TOMORROWS in the works?

“There are two other books,” Kingsbury said, adding that one sequel, “Just Beyond the Clouds,” has enough story material for two seasons.

She continued, “We’ve already outlined it. We’re kind of anticipating with the success [of A THOUSAND TOMORROWS] that…we’ll get to do more with it.”

A portion of Movieguide®’s review for the first three episodes of A THOUSAND TOMORROWS reads:

The first three episodes of A THOUSAND TOMORROWS on Pure Flix introduce Cody Gunner, a bull rider who struggles with anger, and Ali Daniels, a barrel rider with a deadly illness. Both win big at the rodeo and begin to discover God’s plan as they face their own challenges. Cody’s mother tries to get him to reconcile with his estranged father, but he remains bitter. As Ali’s condition worsens, she confronts the fact that her illness will take away everything she loves. Cody and Ali become friends and learn to trust each other with their struggles.

The first three episodes of A THOUSAND TOMORROWS use intense rodeo scenes, sweeping landscapes and purposeful acting to take viewers on an exciting ride on the rodeo circuit. Some rodeo sequences feel repetitive and could be condensed, but the plot and character development are engaging. Also, the first three episodes have a strong Christian, moral worldview. The characters read their Bibles, pray for each another and learn to trust God. The story also stresses family, forgiveness, hard work, kindness, and hope. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger children.
