Actress Yvonne Orji On Saving Herself For Marriage: Make God ‘Proud’

By Movieguide® Contributor

INSECURE star Yvonne Orji is opening up about her commitment to staying celibate until marriage.

“I’m open, because why not?” she told PEOPLE of her decision to share this part of her life with the public. “I’m grounded in who I am.”

Orji continued, “Before any of [the fame] happened, I sat down with myself and with God and thought, when I make it, how do you want me to represent you while I’m here? It was like, OK, I know why I’m here. It’s to make you proud.”

“People ask about it because they’re curious, or they may not understand,” the actress explained. “How will they ever understand if I don’t talk about it? I can inform your curiosity, as opposed to everyone being in the dark and just sort of creating their own narrative about it.”

Orji spoke more about her celibacy during an appearance on Chelsea Handler’s “Dear Chelsea” podcast, joking about what her future husband is in for.

“Pray for him, whoever he is,” she laughed. “There’s a lot of pent-up energy up in here with me.”

Reactions to Orji’s comments were very positive, with many praising her for her commitment, as well as her openness.

“Wow, that’s awesome,” one person wrote. “Says a lot about her, and because she saved herself, God is gonna [sic] keep blessing and when she [does] find the right one, God is going to prosper her with a beautiful family.”

Another fan commented, “I love this for her! People don’t understand the value of saving yourself and look too much at the ‘religious’ view of it, when God is really trying to spare us from heartbreak and other people’s demons.”

Movieguide® previously reported on THE BACHELOR’s Madison Prewett, who also spoke publicly about her commitment to celibacy:

Madison Prewett, 23, declared on Monday night’s episode of THE BACHELOR that she is “saving herself for marriage” because of her Christian faith. The faith-filled statement is unusual, as most contestants on the show indulge in pre-marital sexual activities.

“Faith is more than just this passed down thing to me, it’s literally my whole life and all of who I am,” Prewett told Bachelor Peter Weber on their one on one date in Peru.

“I want, in a marriage, someone who also has that relationship with the Lord and loves that about me and wants to raise a family in that way,” Prewett continued. “I do want to know that we’re able to be on the same page with that and push each other in that way and grow in that way together.”
