Alex Kendrick Praises God After Recent Health Battles

By Movieguide® Contributor

It’s been a roller coaster of a year for Christian filmmaker Alex Kendrick.

During the ongoing success of his newest movie, LIFEMARK, Alex recently revealed that he also overcame melanoma and a mini-stroke earlier this year.

“So [there were a] couple of scary moments, but I’m very, very grateful and thankful to the Lord,” Kendrick said. “But no matter what happens, He is good and is always faithful and loyal and deserves our praise and worship. … I’m gonna keep rolling, and as long as the Lord allows me to, will keep serving Him and doing what He’s called us to do.”

The director mentioned that after his stroke there were some setbacks but he “slowly overcame that.”

He posted on Instagram that his surgery to remove the melanoma that was on the top of his head was a success.

“I just got word from the doctor that I have clear margins. No cancer!” he posted.

He went on to praise God for the news, “God doesn’t owe us anything. But He walks with us through the hard days because He’s loving, faithful, powerful, and kind. Praise the Lord! Thank you Jesus!!”

Kendrick shared the main takeaways that he is learned from his health battles this year and one of those is to praise God no matter what the season a person is in.

“So there are days I feel great, and you feel like praising the Lord. And then there are days that you don’t feel good, and you have hurdles in front of you. Or you feel terrible. [But] we should still worship the Lord because He’s God. We don’t worship … [only] on the days we feel blessed. We worship God because of who He is [and] He loves us,” Kendrick said.

Movieguide® previously reported on the success of his summer-released movie LIFEMARK, which is based on a true story about an 18-year-old that is reunited with his biological mother that gave him up for adoption:

Alex and Stephen Kendrick posted a video on their Facebook, taking the opportunity to thank fans for their support, encourage others to see the movie, and point people to the Gospel; which is at the heart of LIFEMARK and the real-life story its is based on.

“We got some good news folks,” Stephen said. “LIFEMARK just got extended another week in theaters!” Out of the 1,500 theaters, 1,100 asked if they keep showing LIFEMARK to audiences, the Kendrick Brothers said. In its opening weekend, LIFEMARK reached No. 7 on the top-ten list of top-grossing movies at the domestic box office. “We were excited to have seven days but we had 1500 theaters, almost 1100 said, ‘Can we keep you another week? And we said, Okay!’” Alex said.

However, it is not only audiences that are giving LIFEMARK positive reviews, but also critics.

“Usually, you’ve got those where the audience loves the film and the critics trash the film, but what’s happening?” Stephen asked Alex. “So far, any of you can go to Rotten Tomatoes and look at the reviews, even the secular critics are giving it positive reviews,” Alex said.

The Kendrick brothers will also begin shooting a new movie next year, but fans will have to wait for more details
