AMERICAN IDOL contestant Dontrell Briggs floored judges after performing a gospel song called “For Your Glory.”
Judge Lionel Richie applauded the North Carolina native for his performance went on stage to hug Briggs.
Before his performance, Briggs shared that he chose the song as a tribute to his godmother, Betty Morrison, who recently died.
“She played a very big part in my life — not a day that I could not call her and she wouldn’t be right there for me,” Briggs said.
“If I get that golden ticket, she is going to be rejoicing with the angels,” he added.
“Some people can come in and just sing, and then some people come in and just let God come through them,” Richie said after Briggs’ rendition of the gospel song.
While fellow judges Luke Bryan and Katy Perry weren’t convinced from his first performance, they let Briggs tackle another song, “Tennessee Whiskey” by Chris Stapleton.
“Yes, you’re going to Hollywood,” Bryan said after Briggs’ second song. “I just got chills all over on that one.”
