Andy Serkis Set to Star in, Direct New LORD OF THE RINGS Movie

Andy Serkis is set to direct and star in an upcoming LORD OF THE RINGS movie, tentatively titled LORD OF THE RINGS: THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM.
“For over two-decades, moviegoers have embraced the LORD OF THE RINGS film trilogy because of the undeniable devotion Peter [Jackson], Fran [Walsh] and Philippa [Boyens] have shown towards protecting the legacy of Tolkien’s works, and to ensure audiences could experience the incredible world he created in a way that honors his literary vision,” Warner Bros. Motion Pictures heads Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy said in a joint statement.
Jackson is set to produce the movie, while Walsh and Boyens will write the screenplay and serve as producers.
“We are honored they have agreed be our partners on these two new films,” De Luca and Abdy’s statement continued. “With Andy coming aboard to direct LORD OF THE RINGS: THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM (*WT), we continue an important commitment to excellence that is a true hallmark of how we all want to venture ahead and further contribute to the LORD OF THE RINGS cinematic history.”
Jackson, Walsh and Boyens also released a statement about the upcoming project, calling it “an honor and a privilege to travel back to Middle-earth with our good friend and collaborator, Andy Serkis, who has unfinished business with that Stinker — Gollum!”
Serkis, who has previously portrayed Gollum in the LORD OF THE RINGS movies, gave his comment while in character — “Yesssss, Precious. The time has come once more to venture into the unknown with my dear friends, the extraordinary and incomparable guardians of Middle-earth Peter, Fran and Philippa.”
He continued, “With Mike and Pam, and the Warner Bros team on the quest as well, alongside WETA and our filmmaking family in New Zealand, it’s just all too delicious…”
There’s no official word yet on when fans can expect LORD OF THE RINGS: THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM to hit the big screen, but Warner CEO David Zaslav teased that they “anticipate releasing in 2026.”

New content for THE LORD OF THE RINGS fans is coming to screens in 2024.
Fans can expect to see THE RINGS OF POWER SEASON 2 and an animated movie, THE WAR OF THE ROHIRRIM.
“WB has decided to revisit The Lord of the Rings again in an effort to bring the franchise back to big screens.” Movie Web said about Warner Bros.’ THE WAR OF THE ROHIRRIM. “The first film of this endeavor is not, as you would expect, another live-action adventure. Instead, it is an animated feature that is visually inspired by many popular anime films as well as the live-action LORD OF THE RINGS films.”
“This film, titled THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE WAR OF THE ROHIRRIM, is a spin-off/prequel that tells the story of the famous Helm Hammerhand, King of Rohan, who ruled over 250 years prior to the events of THE LORD OF THE RINGS,” Movie Web continued. “It was in honor of the brave deeds and ferocity of Helm Hammerhand that Helm’s Deep, the Rohirrim stronghold featured in THE TWO TOWERS, was given its name.”
The other big upcoming LOTR project is Amazon Prime’s THE RINGS OF POWER Season 2.
Screen Rant shared what Season 2’s storyline will be: “Season 1 ended with the three elven rings forged and, unlike in Tolkien’s novels, mithril is the key to their creation. The forging of more rings will require more mithril, meaning the ongoing story of Khazad-dûm and the Balrog that lurks beneath the mines will surely be important. Meanwhile, Gandalf is journeying to the lands of Rhûn, an area Tolkien never really explored but seems to be significant in the RINGS OF POWER season 2 story.”
