Anne Hathaway Says PRINCESS DIARIES 3 ‘Is in a Good Place’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Anne Hathaway is updating fans about whether they can expect a third PRINCESS DIARIES movie.

“We’re in a good place. That’s all I can say. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place,” Hathaway, who plays Mia Thermopolis in the franchise, told V Magazine.

PRINCESS DIARIES and PRINCESS DIARIES 2: ROYAL ENGAGEMENT both earned +3 content ratings from Movieguide®.

Part of Movieguide®’s review for the second movie reads:

PRINCESS DIARIES 2 is one of the best constructed movies of the summer, with a straight-ahead plot, good sense of jeopardy, and a story that keeps the audience engrossed the whole time. Mia’s grandmother, Queen Clarisse, teaches values like duty, honor, patriotism, and kindness, and Mia demonstrates them in reaching out to the people of Genovia, especially the orphans. This movie is surprisingly free of any mean-spiritedness. Overall, it is one of the morally great movies of the year. Julie Andrews even gets to sing a song, which is amazing after her famous throat operation, and Anne Hathaway has matured beautifully as an actress. THE PRINCESS DIARIES 2 will delight and inform princesses and princes of all ages. Bravo!

Hathaway credits PRINCESS DIARIES for launching her career.

“I’m really lucky. My first substantial film role, the second film I ever did, was THE PRINCESS DIARIES,” Hathaway told V Magazine. “I was so generously invited into that process by Garry Marshall; he valued my take on being a teenage girl and elevated me to such a valued status on set that it never occurred to me on other sets that I didn’t have that same autonomy, or that same ability to collaborate. I always wanted to be pleasant. But I also always thought that having strong opinions meant I was doing my job.”

The movies’ other stars are also eager to return to the franchise.

“Back in 2019, Mandy Moore (Lana Thomas), Heather Matarazzo (Lilly Moscovitz), Chris Pine (Nicholas Devereaux), Julie Andrews (Queen Clarisse Renaldi), and Hathaway (Mia Thermopolis) were all interested in appearing in the movie,” Town & Country reported.

However, earlier this year, Andrews wasn’t sure if PRINCESS DIARIES 3 would happen.

“It’s quite a long time now since the two DIARIES were done, and I’m not sure, but sometimes it’s best to leave a good thing alone. I don’t like it when people milk and milk and milk the subject, you know, ’til it’s dead,” she told TODAY.

“I’d be very happy if we did do another one,” she added. “But I don’t expect to.”

Movieguide® reported:

Anne Hathaway one of many excited people anticipating the upcoming third installment of THE PRINCESS DIARIES!

While the actress has not officially signed on to the project, she has expressed how excited she is to hear that it’s finally happening.

Hathaway shared that it was “thrilling” to see how happy fans are about another PRINCESS DIARIES movie. She also mentioned that she understands how fans feel about having to wait for another movie for almost two decades.

“We feel the exact same, and I know it’s probably very frustrating,” Hathaway said. “It’s a process that requires patience, and so everybody should consider themselves a part of the movie business now, because this is how long it actually takes to make things.”
