Anne Hathaway’s 5 Years of Sobriety ‘Feels Like a Milestone’
By Movieguide® Contributor
In 2019, PRINCESS DIARIES star Anne Hathaway decided to quit drinking alcohol.
Five years later, she is still sober and considers the achievement a major milestone.
“There are so many other things I identify as milestones. I don’t normally talk about it, but I am over five years sober,” she said in an interview with The New York Times. “That feels like a milestone to me. Forty feels like a gift. The fact of the matter is I hesitate at calling things ‘middle age’ simply because I can be a semantic stickler and I could get hit by a car later today. We don’t know if this is middle age. We don’t know anything.”
Hathaway revealed in the interview that she began drinking to cope with not feeling comfortable in her body.
“It feels a little too exposed to discuss the alienation I felt from my body, but there was a lot of somatic stress there,” she said, adding that she was “very in my head about a lot of things.”
“I was just stuck in this feeling. It’s that thing about, ‘I want to achieve things, I want to grow,’ and you think, mistakenly, that the way you do that is to be really hard on yourself,” Hathaway explained. “You drive yourself by self-criticism. I won’t go into the specifics, but there was a moment in which I realized that in order to keep that narrative alive, I was going to have to deny so much.”
“I knew deep down it wasn’t for me,” she told Variety Fair of her decision to cut alcohol. “And it just felt so extreme to have to say, ‘But none?’ But none.”
“For me, it was wallowing fuel,” Hathaway said of drinking. “And I don’t like to wallow.”
She previously told Ellen DeGeneres that she initially gave up drinking to be a better mom.
“I don’t totally love the way I [drink] and he’s [her son] getting to an age where he really does need me all the time in the mornings…I did one school run one day where I dropped him off at school, I wasn’t driving, but I was hungover and that was enough for me. I didn’t love that one,” she explained.
