A classic medium for Christian radio may go extinct — not because it’s outdated — but because people are trying to control information.

Recently, automakers have pushed to remove AM radio from vehicals, and that’s no surprise in an age where information is censored and controlled. However, new legislation called the “AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act” hopes to keep freedom of speech and information safe.

The act would require all new vehicles sold in the US, regardless of where they were manufactured, to have an AM option on the dashboard.

“We’re living in a time where free speech, particularly for faith-based voices, are being threatened. That’s why I’m proud to champion the ‘AM for Every Vehicle Act,'” Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said at the 2025 NRB International Christian Media Convention.

“AM radio isn’t just a medium for news and entertainment — it’s a critical platform for emergency communication, public discourse, and of course, for Christian radio,” he explained.

He continued, “I’m honored to stand with you in defending religious liberty, protecting free speech, and ensuring that Christian media continues to thrive.”

AM radio was invented in 1906, and faith has been central since the start. In fact, the first thing to ever be transmitted through its waves was the Bible.

According to the National Inventors Hall of Fame, a Canadian named Reginald A. Fessenden, who worked with Thomas Edison, studied wireless radio communication.

“On Christmas Eve 1906, Fessenden transmitted the first radio broadcast from Brant Rock Station, Massachusetts, which could be heard by ships off at sea — a song played on the violin and a passage read from the Bible,” the group wrote. Thus, AM radio was born.

Now 119 years later, it’s future is threatened. Along with Cruz, President Donald Trump signaled his support for the “AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act,” stating, “I will do my part to protect AM radio in our cars.”

Keeping AM radio alive is about more than just free speech. The National Association of Broadcasters shared that draws “tens of millions of weekly listeners [and] is highly important to agricultural communities, communities of color and underrepresented groups.”

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said, “Experts at [FEMA]…have been clear: eliminating the AM radio will put public safety at risk.”

It is clear that AM radio still plays a vital role in society, and in a world so often dictated by politicians and social media algorithms, it’s freeing to have a source where freedom of speech still thrives.
