‘Bittersweet’: Babylon Bee Founder Sells Remaining Stake In Company
By Movieguide® Contributor
Babylon Bee founder Adam Ford recently announced he has sold his remaining stake in the satire website.
“My season at The Babylon Bee and Not the Bee has come to an end,” he posted on Facebook. “I have sold my remaining stake in The Babylon Bee, as well as my stake in Not the Bee, and now it’s time for me to ride off into the midday sun.”
Ford explained that he has not been “operationally involved” with the website “for some time now” and decided it was finally time to fully step away.
“I always figured I could go on forever working like a maniac and seeing every terrible thing that happens around the world in real-time. But, I finally hit a concrete wall after many years, and there was no way around it. I tried to find one, even as the inevitable consequences of burnout compounded,” he said.
He continued, “This is all quite bittersweet and difficult for me. I love these companies dearly and always will. They have been my entire life for the better part of a decade, and what an adventure it has been…As far as myself, I am going to venture out of my office and back into the world for a bit to see where God leads me.”
In a 2018 interview with The Christian Post, Ford shared how he started The Babylon Bee.
“It happened organically, really. It was just God’s plan,” he explained. “The Bee was an idea I had had for years, but when I started it I considered it a ‘side project.’ I felt strongly that it would fill a void in the internet and that it would possibly become popular, but I had no idea it would blow up the way it did.”
Ford sold The Babylon Bee to Christian entrepreneur Seth Dillon in 2018, saying, “Seth, the new owner, is a successful businessman who uses his resources for Kingdom purposes. The Bee is in good hands.”
Movieguide® previously reported on managing editor Joel Berry’s thoughts on the role of satire today:
According to the managing editor of The Babylon Bee, Joel Berry, satire is a tool they can use to teach truth.
“In today’s world, humor has kind of become one of the most effective ways of communicating truth,” Berry told CBN’s Faithwire. “We’re oversaturated with information. It’s coming at us from all sides. There’s so many distractions. Our attention spans are short.
“I think it serves to give people courage. I think social media is designed to keep us in silos and cut off from each other … feeling alone,” he added. “And, in the way, we think like we’re the only sane person left on planet Earth, and The Babylon Bee … serves to help people remember they’re not alone in thinking and their worldview.”
