How Bethany Hamilton Plans to Change Minds About the Pro-Life Movement

Bethany Hamilton wants the pro-life movement to approach opposition with “love and grace and mercy.”
“Now, as a mother of four, I just cannot imagine taking my own child’s life. It’s just the most devastating thought possible,” she said while speaking at the National Pro-Life Summit. “I recently lost a nephew. It was the worst thing I have ever experienced. And so I can really empathize with these women though. After they take their baby’s life, they’re going to live with that for the rest of their life.”
Hamilton continued, “I have a sibling up in heaven and I can’t wait to meet them at some point. But that was God’s plan for my mom’s life. She has to live with that for the rest of her life. And you know, she’s getting to the end of time, but she is the most incredible mother. She’s the most incredible grandma, and it’s just so beautiful to see how God has changed her life.”

“When my mom took her baby’s life, she didn’t know God,” she concluded. “And so when I think of, like, this movement to save babies, I think of, like, how can we change their hearts and minds? And it’s through God’s grace and love and mercy. Not through anger, not through pointing the finger, but through love and grace and mercy.”
Hamilton was also present at this year’s March for Life, where she told an interviewer, “I just think children are truly a blessing from God, and human life is, to me, of the utmost value. And so, today is a day to honor life.”

The former pro-surfer recently launched The Bethany Hamilton Network, a mentorship and community-building program.
“This project is all about building community and providing resources for families and teens seeking inspiration and growth for mind, body, and spirit,” Hamilton posted on Instagram. “I know God has given me a unique voice, perspective and presence that is needed in the world and that moves me to keep showing up in the different spaces that I believe I’m called to.”
She added, “Thank you for joining me on this journey. I’m thrilled to have you here and truly believe God has called each and everyone of us to live a fearless life.”
