Blake Shelton Hopes to Cut Back Drinking in New Year

By Movieguide® Contributor

Country music star Blake Shelton opened up about his New Year’s resolution, announcing that he hopes to cut back—or even quit—drinking.

“I haven’t managed to stop drinking yet,” said Shelton. “Even cutting back has been hard. I mean, it’s a resolution though. And I’ll say it again right now — that’s my New Year’s resolution. To either cut back or stop drinking altogether. Let’s just say I said it.”

The country singer is getting ready for his NEW YEAR’S EVE LIVE: NASHVILLE’S BIG BASH to air on Dec. 31 at 7:30 p.m. ET. Since the performance has already been taped, Shelton shared what he and his wife, Gwen Stefani, are planning to do to ring in the new year.

“The former THE VOICE coach told ET that they’re planning an early night. ‘If we’re at home during New Year’s Eve, we’re probably going to bed before it even happens,’” he said, per PEOPLE.

He explained that they don’t have many New Year’s Eve traditions because “It’s not often that one of us isn’t working.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Shelton and Stefani’s relationship:

Former THE VOICE coach Blake Shelton recently recalled the first time he met now-wife Gwen Stefani and how he knew she “wasn’t like any other famous person…”

“It was clear to me that she was a mother first and foremost over anything else in the world,” Shelton continued. “That was her No. 1 job. Now, standing here almost 10 years later, after I first met her, I can say without question that being a mother is still the most important thing in her life. I got to tell you all that’s rare in this business.”

He then praised Stefani for her songwriting and performing abilities, saying, “Gwen has blessed a lot of people’s lives…You deserve this, and I love you.”

The couple began dating in 2015 and have been married since 2021.

Shelton previously opened up about how being a stepdad to Stefani’s three sons, Kingston, Zuma and Apollo, has changed him.

“I think being a stepdad has changed my perspective in that I’m not the first person that I think about anymore,” he said. “Even to the small little things when you go, ‘I think I’ll do this,’ the very next thought is always, ’Well, wait a minute. How’s that going work?’ Or, ‘What will they think?’ Or, ‘How will that affect a schedule?'”

“They’ve taught me something about myself that I never knew: I’m more than just a country singer or a goofy guy. I’m someone they actually lean on, and that’s not a responsibility that I ever had and not something that I ever considered even being into,” he added.
