‘Blessed Beyond Measure’: Denzel Washington Grateful for Wife, Pauletta

By Movieguide® Contributor

TRAINING DAY actor Denzel Washington appeared on Tom Brady’s “Let’s Go! with Tom Brady, Larry Fitzgerald and Jim Gray” radio show, where the actor shared how grateful he is for his wife, Pauletta, ahead of Thanksgiving.

“The Missus is getting everything ready. The long table is out. People come from all over. She told me she had a 11th-hour issue this morning that was, like, they brought the wrong-size turkey or something,” Washington began. “So, she had to go get an extra turkey or something.”

“And I don’t do anything in the kitchen but eat,” he joked. “She kicked me outta there. She’s like, ‘You have nothing to do with this. Just go make some money and get out the way.'”

Despite all the jokes, Washington shared just how grateful he is for his wife.

“I’m thankful, and I have been blessed beyond measure with the greatest woman in the world, who not only is a beautiful woman and a great wife, and I love her, great mother of our children, but she holds everything together,” he expressed.

In a 2018 interview with PEOPLE, Washington revealed what makes his marriage successful. “I do what I’m told. I keep my mouth shut,” he joked before adding, “There’s too many things!”

He continued. “What pops into my head: security, food, a beautiful home. The difference between a house and a home, it’s a big difference. You can buy a house, but that doesn’t make it a home — and not to say a man can’t make a home a home, but my wife has made our house a home, and raised these beautiful kids and protected them and sacrificed for them. She did the heavy lifting.”

“Washington and Pauletta met on the set of his first movie, 1977’s WILMA. After getting to know each other at a mutual friend’s party sometime after filming the movie, the couple married in 1983. They share four kids: John David, Katia and twins Malcolm and Olivia,” PEOPLE reported.

Movieguide® previously reported on Denzel:

Denzel Washington recently talked about how faith influenced his directing of A JOURNAL FOR JORDAN.

“[We] always started the day with prayer,” Washington told Relevant magazine. The actor would gather the cast and crew to pray each day before shooting and he says it transformed the movie. “There’s all kinds of little miracles that you run into that you didn’t anticipate.”

Washington’s father was a Pentecostal minister. Washington spent his life working to lead a life that would make his father proud, using his faith to guide his work.

“If you have faith, then have faith,” he stated. “It’s easy to say, harder to do. And you do forget.”

“Didn’t always know how it would [work],” Washington continued, walking about his career. “But just being thankful and having an attitude of gratitude [helped].”
