‘Blessed’: Celine Dion Makes Surprise Appearance at Grammys

Celine Dion’s surprise appearance at this year’s Grammy Awards has some wondering if the singer is planning a comeback.
“Thank you all, I love you right back,” Dion said after receiving a standing ovation while presenting the Album of the Year trophy. “When I say that I’m happy to be here, I really mean it, from my heart. Those who have been blessed enough to be here must never take for granted the tremendous love and joy that music brings to our lives and to people all around the world.”
Dion has recently taken a step back from both performing and public life as she battles Stiff Person Syndrome. Movieguide® previously reported:
Dion has largely stayed out of the public eye following her announcement that she had been diagnosed with stiff person syndrome.
“While we’re still learning about this rare condition, we now know this is what’s been causing all of the spasms that I’ve been having,” she said in a video sharing her diagnosis. “Unfortunately, these spasms affect every aspect of my daily life, sometimes causing difficulties when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal cords to sing the way I’m used to.”
Earlier this year, the “My Heart Will Go On” singer was forced to cancel a planned tour.
“I’m so sorry to disappoint all of you once again. I’m working really hard to build back my strength, but touring can be very difficult even when you’re 100%,” she wrote on Instagram. “It’s not fair to you to keep postponing the shows, and even though it breaks my heart, it’s best that we cancel everything now until I’m really ready to be back on stage again. I want you all to know, I’m not giving up… and I can’t wait to see you again!”
The singer also recently announced an upcoming documentary, I AM: CELINE DION, that will explore her ongoing battle with Stiff Person Syndrome.
“This last couple of years has been such a challenge for me,” Dion said in a statement about the documentary. “The journey from discovering my condition to learning how to live with and manage it, but not to let it define me. As the road to resuming my performing career continues, I have realized how much I have missed it, being able to see my fans. During this absence, I decided I wanted to document this part of my life, to try to raise awareness of this little-known condition, to help others who share this diagnosis.”
A source close to the singer said, “People will see everything she went through. She’s taking things step by step. [Her illness] is incurable, but she’s honestly doing well and looks incredible.”
