Book Review – MASTERING THE ART OF MEDIA MESSAGING
By Dr. Ted Baehr, Publisher Michael Emerson’s book MASTERING THE ART OF MEDIA MESSAGING is a must read, and the best read I have encountered in my 40 years of teaching communications courses. As an award-winning producer, writer, director of many programs on the History Channel, A&E, Bio, NatGeo, the Disney Channel and others, including some MOVIEGUIDE® Award winners and nominees such as WORLD WAR II IN HD and WHEN COWBOYS WERE KING, Michael Emerson has had a lot of success on which to base his insights. Most successful people in the industry keep their secrets close to the vest. Michael, however, gives you a manual that will help improve your media messaging in every possible way. I am so enthusiastic about it that I am going to suggest that it should be required reading for our office. The elements Michael covers in the book are How to Get Free Media to Promote Yourself or Your Product(s), Impacting the Public, Improving Your Image, Controlling the Media Instead of Being Controlled by the Media, How To Tailor Your Message, and much more. As an added bonus, Michael also presents his “Ten Commandments of Communication”. MASTERING THE ART OF MEDIA MESSAGING is very practical and straightforward, with a strong Christian, moral, patriotic, and pro-capitalist worldview. It helps you understand the principles with clear illustrations. In spite of how practical it is, it is extremely interesting. While reading it, I didn’t want to put it down. I have written several books on communications through the mass media and consider Michael’s insightful, excellent book to be one of the very best.
