This Heavy Metal Rocker Found Jesus While on Drugs: ‘Heart Was Changed’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Grammy Award-winning artist Brian “Head” Welch, a guitarist for nu-metal band Korn, knows that Jesus really does have the power to transform any life.
After attending a church service his real estate broker invited him to, Welch went home and snorted a line of crystal meth while his daughter watched TV in the other room. But in that moment, he knew he needed Jesus to save him.
“Jesus, if you’re real like that pastor said, then you got to take these drugs from me. Come into my life. Come into my heart,” Welch told ChurchLeaders of his prayer after he snorted the drugs.
“I just got quiet. I said, ‘Search me right now. Search my heart.’ And I stayed silent and I said, ‘You know I want to quit. You know I want to be a good dad for this kid. And she’s going to lose me if I don’t quit. Amen,’” Welch continued.
“I felt so much fatherly love from heaven, and it was like, ‘I don’t condemn you. I love you. I love you,’” the guitarist explained. “Instantly, that love from God came into me. It was so powerful that the next day, I threw away all my drugs, and I quit Korn.”
“I was like, I’m quitting Korn and I am going to raise my kid because I got the love from God coming out of me and then it came out of me to my kid,” he continued. “It changed me. My heart was changed like that…God used [my daughter] to save me, to save her life later on.”

That moment took place 20 years ago, an anniversary Welch celebrated on Instagram.
“It disturbs me to think where @brianheadwelch might be today, if on January 9th 2005, I didn’t come crashing into a life changing encounter with light>love>forgiveness>goodness>mercy. On that day, (20 YEARS AGO TODAY!), a couple of powerful things were set in motion: 1. hatred of self-started to dissipate. 2. love and forgiveness for God, self and others was birthed,” he wrote.
“Every single promise that I searched for and found in Scripture, along with other promises revealed spiritually to my heart over the years have manifested as true and have fully convinced me,” he conitnued. “But many of those promises I was being taught at a time when I was losing it all, watching everything come crashing down in my life. I had every reason to call B. S. because I was seeing the opposite take place in my circumstances. But I chose to hang on and keep believing those promises.”
“The biggest lesson I learned by not giving up while going through those challenges: a house (our life) is never allowed to be demolished unless the purpose and intent of the demolition is to completely rebuild; the foundation will be much stronger, and the house (life) way more beautiful. I know mine is,” he concluded. “Never lose heart when you’re being tested. The test will prove you are faithful and the rewards will start to fall in your lap.”
Welch eventually rejoined Korn, something he felt called to do.
“I know the music’s crazy, but mainly the lyrics are about pain,” Welch said. “And they’re coming from a real and raw place. People need hope. There’s addictions like crazy in that world. There’s depression. It’s been a lot of suicide stories happening. What better place [for me] to be, having the meaning of life that I carry? You know, I know the answer for the meaning of life.”
“It’s not the most popular thing to do at a rock concert is talk about Christ. I’m doing it because it’s the most realest thing that’s ever happened to me in my life,” he explained.
