Caitlin Clark Breaks Another WNBA Rookie-Year Record

Caitlin Clark Breaks Another WNBA Rookie-Year Record

By Movieguide® Contributor

Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark has broken the WNBA record for assists made in a rookie season.

The previous record holder, Ticha Penicheiro, a Portuguese guard, secured 225 assists for the Sacramento Monarchs in 1998.

“Super proud of you,” Penicheiro congratulated Clark on X. “I know the work that you put in. A lot of people always talked about your shooting. I was always mesmerized about your passing, your court vision and how you make your teammates better. So this record is in great hands. And continue to do what you do, continue to elevate your game and the women’s game and the WNBA.”

“Records are meant to be broken…it shows growth and evolution. Can’t think of a better player to break it,” she added.

According to The Athletic, “The WNBA season was shorter during Penicheiro’s rookie year, but it took the Portuguese guard 30 games to reach 225. Clark exceeded that mark in Indiana’s 28th game of the season, with 12 more contests left to put that total out of reach for future first-years.”

“Well, Ticha has always been a big fan of mine ever since I was in college,” the WNBA All-Star said after the game on Sunday. “She has always been there to congratulate me or just be somebody that’s offered advice. To pass somebody like her, I’m just forever thankful. She’s been such a legend in our game. It’s super cool, but hopefully there are a lot more of those.”

Breaking records isn’t anything new for Clark. She broke two NCAA records while at Iowa, as Movieguide® previously reported:

Clark, who just recently broke the record for the most points scored by any female collegiate basketball player, is also on her way to scoring the most points in collegiate history for both men and women.

She also just surpassed Lynette Woodard for the most 3-pointers made in a single season.

The Fever are currently sitting in seventh place in the WNBA rankings, and only the top eight make it into the playoffs.

Clark hopes to lead her team well into the playoffs and maybe even give the Fever a championship in her rookie season.
