Caitlin Clark Wins WNBA Rookie of the Year Award: ‘Filled With Gratitude’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Many people doubted whether or not Caitlin Clark would take her success from college to the WNBA.
Well, the basketball star did not disappoint in her first year as a pro.
Per Fox News Digital, “Clark finished with 19.2 points, 8.4 assists (which led the WNBA), and 5.7 rebounds per game. Her 19.2 points were the most by any rookie this season.”
She set multiple records this season. Clark scored “the most points and three-pointers by a rookie in league history,” was the first rookie to “record a triple-double” and led the league with 334 assists, the “most by any player ever in a single season.”
With her outstanding first year in the league, it was a no-brainer that she would get the WNBA Rookie of the Year award.
Out of 67 votes for Rookie of the Year, Clark received 66 of them.
The Indiana Fever shared the call between Clark and league commissioner, Cathy Engelbert.
“It feels like just yesterday that I called your name to the stage as the number one pick in this year’s draft,” Engelbert began.
“I know the best is yet to come,” she added. “So congratulations Caitlin, you are the 2024 Kia WNBA Rookie of the Year!”
Upon hearing the news, “Clark looked proud and emotional as she heard Engelbert tell her the good news. Her Fever teammates reacted excitedly to the announcement as well, jumping up and down with her and cheering for their rookie teammate’s success,” PEOPLE reported.
Clark and the Fever were unfortunately knocked out of the playoffs in the first round, but she is excited about what her future will look like in the WNBA.
“Year one ✅ — thank you to the many people who have supported me as I’ve been able to live my childhood dream,” Clark wrote on Instagram. “I’m filled with gratitude as I reflect on this past year of my life. See you all in year two.”
Movieguide® previously reported on Clark:
Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever became the first rookie in WNBA history to record a triple-double.
Per TODAY, “Clark finished with 19 points, 13 assists and 12 rebounds for Indiana (9-13). The No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft was one rebound shy of a triple-double two games ago in an 88-82 road victory over the Phoenix Mercury.”
What’s even cooler about her historic night is that “Clark, who wears No. 22, reached the triple-double in the 22nd game of her WNBA career. It was also the first triple-double in Fever history, going back to the launch of the franchise in 2000. Clark had 17 triple-doubles in her college career at Iowa — and the Hawkeyes won all those games,” ESPN reported.
Clark shared a series of photos from the game and wrote, “Fun was had with the girls.”
