Can AI Predict Your Future?

A new study found that by analyzing college admissions essays using an AI tool, researchers could accurately predict how successful a student would be in the future based on how they connected different thoughts and ideas.

Some of the world’s greatest thinkers have long believed that the ability to see connections between seemingly irrelevant ideas is the sign of strong cognitive creativity, the skill needed to make major breakthroughs. Scientists may have now found a way to measure a person’s cognitive creativity through their writing.

A new study analyzed over 40,000 people using AI to establish a link between how ideas are presented in college essays and the success of students throughout their time in higher education. Researchers found that the number of connections a student made between different ideas in their essay and the fluidity with which they made those connections strongly correlated with strong academic achievement in college.

“Although application essays have no direct impact on students’ performance in college once enrolled, the way a student expresses ideas in these essays, when quantified properly, can shed light on their future success,” the study said. “This suggests that the topography of someone’s written output provides a window into their though process which can by systematically and objectively quantified for novel information and insight.”

This unique insight is a promising lead into the future of the college application process as more schools place less emphasis on standardized testing – something that is largely impacted by socioeconomic status. By peeking directly into someone’s brain with the help of AI, colleges can more accurately identify students who will achieve a high level of success.

While this study only looked at college essays, the researchers wondered how this insight could be applied outside of school. Perhaps the content in cover letters could provide similar insight into an applicant’s processing skills. If that’s the case, AI may soon play a large role in millions of people’s future.

It’s already impacting how people study weather patterns. Google’s new AI program SEEDS can predict the weather faster than meteorologists.

“Scalable Ensemble Envelope Diffusion Sampley, or SEEDS for short, uses the power of AI to generate numerous weather forecasts in a short amount of time. This in turn allows researchers to analyze a wider range of possible weather outcomes, and can even predict natural disasters days or weeks before they happen,” Relevant Magazine said.

“Accurate weather forecasts can have a direct impact on people’s lives, from helping make routine decisions,” Google said. “The importance of accurate and timely weather forecasts will only increase as the climate changes. Recognizing this, we at Google have been investing in weather and climate research to help ensure that the forecasting technology of tomorrow can meet the demand for reliable weather information.”

Google says SEEDS even predicts rare events that current weather prediction programs miss.

Analytic Insight reported, “A key strength of SEED lies in its capacity to quantify uncertainty within weather forecasts. Given the ‘butterfly effect’ concept, where minor alterations can lead to significant variations, this feature holds particular relevance in meteorology. SEED’s probabilistic methodology enhances comprehension of the likelihood of diverse weather scenarios, offering essential insights for planning and decision-making, especially in the context of extreme weather occurrences.”

“This technology opens up novel opportunities for weather and climate science, and it represents one of the first applications to weather and climate forecasting of probabilistic diffusion models,” Google said in its statement with graphs, charts and other visual data included.

Live Science added that the model is also cheaper than current programs.

SEEDS also predicts events ahead of what meteorologists and current programs can accurately predict, which is usually a few days. SEEDS can predict events a week in advance.
