Candace Cameron Bure Stands Against Cancel Culture After Homophobia Accusations

By Movieguide® Contributor

Candace Cameron Bure continues to take on cancel culture as she holds firm to Christian values.

After Casey, the first openly gay character on FULLER HOUSE, was removed from the show, Bure was accused of homophobia. Miss Benny—the transgender actor who played Casey–alleged that showrunners warned her that “one of the Tanner sisters” wanted the actor off the show.

“I remember I got sat down by the writers and the studio basically to warn me how this person allegedly was trying to get the character removed and not have a queer character on the show,” Miss Benny said.

Bure responded in a statement that the allegations were untrue while sharing that she wishes she could have connected with Miss Benny while they were working on the show.

“I never asked Miss Benny’s character to be removed from FULLER HOUSE and did not ask the writers, producers or studio executives to not have queer characters on the show,” Bure told People.

“FULLER HOUSE has always welcomed a wide range of characters. I thought Miss Benny did a great job as Casey on the show,” she continued. “We didn’t share any scenes together, so we didn’t get a chance to talk much while filming on set. I wish Miss Benny only the best.”

Although Bure has always held firm to her Christian values throughout her career, she has formed friendships with many people who hold different values than her. However, she has leaned into Christian media in recent years, desiring to create uplifting, morally strong movies.

Bure joined the Great American Family media group last year as the chief creative officer.

“My heart wants to tell stories that have more meaning and purpose and depth behind them,” she told The Wall Street Journal in 2022. “I knew that the people behind Great American Family were Christians that love the Lord and wanted to promote faith and programming and good family entertainment.”

Bure moved towards mainly Christian content after a 10-year break from the industry to raise her kids. During that time, she felt God calling her to create Christian media when she returned to acting.

“God was laying the foundation for the next season of my life going back into the industry and being a voice for Him,” she explained on her podcast. “I wouldn’t have been able to speak about Him had I not had those 10 years to be home with my kids. That gave me the time [to focus] on the Bible and my relationship with the Lord.”

The controversy around Miss Benny’s removal from FULLER HOUSE is not the first time Bure has been targeted by cancel culture. Last year, the actress was attacked by social media star Jojo Siwa who called her the “rudest celebrity.”

Movieguide® previously reported:

In a recent Instagram story, the actress read Isaiah 12:2 aloud: “The Lord is my salvation. I will trust Him and not be afraid for He alone is my strength and my defender.”

She then reiterated, “He has become my salvation.”

Bure recently became the center of a media firestorm after Jojo Siwa called her the “rudest celebrity” she had ever met.
