How Candace Cameron Bure Gave Her Children a Biblical Foundation

Candace Cameron Bure believes it is up to parents to teach children biblical values—something she encourages them to do through their words and actions.

“We’re definitely in a time of a culture war, and I think the best thing that any of us can do as parents is to be consistent and that we actually walk out walk and we show it by example and not just talk the talk,” Bure told The Christian Post.

“It’s a lot easier said than done because those little eyes are always watching you. Mommy and daddy are the biggest examples in life, so they’re always watching to see what you’re going to do,” she continued. “If you as a parent can walk with consistency and back up your words with actions, that speaks volumes, and your children will know that; it doesn’t go unnoticed by them ever. That consistence through life will play out, I truly believe that.”

For Bure, one of the most important ways she taught her children the Bible was to surround them with it.

“Even when my kids were young, I had the fruit of the Spirit lettered on their walls to remind them of all the fruit of the Spirit: joy, love, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, self-control. We talk[ed] about those things,” she explained.

Bure also intentionally taught her kids about Jesus every day, which she believes has led to their lifelong faith.

“I trained my kids up with biblical values, and the Bible is where we started and what we continue to read today…The Bible tells us to ‘train up a child in the way they should go and when they are not old, they won’t depart from it.’ I believe in intentional parenting,” Bure said. “I’m grateful to see that I have adult children today who are following that road and that path, loving the Lord.”

While nothing can replace the Bible, Bure wanted to make teaching biblical principles a little easier, so she launched The Generous Kids Book Club, a monthly subscription providing parents with books and e-books that promote Christian values.

“Reading to my kids, particularly when they were younger, it was my favorite thing to do with them,” Bure explained. “I love books. They’re a great way to teach lessons but also hear what your kids are thinking about, and it invites conversations.”

She told Us Weekly that the books featured for the club promote “values like giving and thoughtfulness and generosity and empathy and compassion. I mean really wonderful things that not only kids need to be reminded of, but we need to be reminded of, too.”

“Whether you’re a person of faith or not, I think you’re really going to appreciate these books,” she continued. “There isn’t Scripture in the books, but they’re teaching all biblical principles, and that’s what we love.”

“Maybe you come from a different faith background, or maybe you just don’t teach any kind of faith at home, but you want your kids to know good values,” she added. “That’s what these books are all about, but if you are a Christian and you know the Bible, you know exactly where [these] source from.”

Kirk Cameron recently invited his sister and fellow actor Candace Cameron Bure onto his TAKEAWAYS set, which is all decorated for Christmas.

Both Kirk and Candace grew up in Los Angeles, where they were flooded with Hollywood and culture that often rebelled against God.

Candace said that raising her family in that culture was only possible when they kept God at the center of their family. Candace shares three children with her husband, Valeri Bure.

“Los Angeles itself isn’t the most god-seeking city that I know, there’s a lot of of other cities in the U.S that I would find much more open to talking about God and church and all of
those things,” Candace said. “You had to really find stand your ground if that’s what you believed in, just with your own neighbors—that we are God’s children and that God’s the priority in our life.”

She added that consistent prayer and reading God’s word is essential. Candace also said that she had ongoing discussions with her children about why they believe what they believe.
