Candace Cameron Bure, Jennie Allen on God’s Compassion ‘Toward Our Fear’

By Movieguide® Contributor

As this generation is constantly exposed to scary news around the world, FULL HOUSE star Candace Cameron Bure and author Jennie Allen explain how to counter fear with God’s assurance on Bure’s April 3 podcast episode.

“We’ve got a million things to be afraid of,” said Allen, author of “Get Out of Your Head” and “Untangle Your Emotions.”

She pointed out that fear “keeps people’s attention.” So, a lot of content today is created to stir up fear in consumers.

But the Bible often says, “Do not fear.” God doesn’t shame us for our fear but comforts those who experience it.

Allen read Isaiah 41:10 for an example: “So do not fear for I am with you do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

“This is a God who is compassionate toward our fear,” Allen said. “He is kind and understanding.”

Allen says fear affects nearly everyone today, creating an “anxious” generation. Neither she nor Bure believes they know anyone who hasn’t ever experienced anxiety.

“Something about the way we’re living, something about how we’re doing life, is causing this just stratospheric level of [anxiety],” Allen said.

Bure posited that social media is a major factor, and Allen agreed.

“We’re just trying to take in so much,” Allen said.

“When I was younger…we didn’t even have access to things that were going on of the other on the other side of the country, let alone the other side of the world,” Bure shared, “and now, which is the beauty of social media and the world wide web…but at the same time, you have access to knowing all of these things that are going on along with the propaganda that’s going on with all of it. And you don’t always know what to believe.”

Allen says this causes confusion, which leads to “fatigued feelings.” This experience drives people to get emotional stimulation by checking social media and surfing the web.

“You may not know that. You may not consciously be doing that, but that’s why you pick up your phone. Right, that’s why you look for something to bring you purpose ‘cause you’re looking for something to kind of wake you up, to jolt you, to give you a hit.  So we’re actually seeking emotional stimulation through all these things,” she said.

Movieguide® reported on Bure and Allen’s discussion on joy and happiness on March 15:

Candace Cameron Bure and Jennie Allen are highlighting the difference between joy and happiness.

“So, happiness, I would say, is an exterior feeling,” Bure explained on an episode of “The Candace Cameron Bure Podcast.” “It’s a feeling that we feel happy when things are created around us that give us happiness. But joy is a deep inner feeling that you have when you have peace and contentment and happiness, too, despite your circumstances. And joy comes from the Lord.”

The pair talked about the importance of finding the things that bring joy, whether it’s going to the beach or eating a favorite snack. By building joy through everyday activities, “you’re going to feel happy more,” Allen promised.

Bure, a woman who displays her faith in real life and on the screen, has won multiple Teddy Bear Awards® at the Movieguide® Awards Galas for her work on uplifting movies. She’s been open about dealing with fear in the past.

She previously shared with TIME, “I had so much fear about my live performances on DANCING WITH THE STARS that sometimes I would forget my steps, even though I knew them well. It didn’t matter that I got a 7 on a routine when maybe I should have gotten a 10. At least I went out there and tried. When you get past your fears, you can really be ready to try new things and gain those great character-building experiences.”

On April 2, Bure posted a clip of her “Fear Not” podcast episode on Instagram. In the video, she recalls a time when she was terrified to go on stage because she didn’t prepare for it.

She told her followers on the post, “The most common phrase AND command in the Bible is ‘do not be afraid’…yet we are crippled with fear, worry, and anxiety time and time again as humans. Of course, we are also crippled with sin, which is why we battle with these feelings, but we can be comforted knowing the Lord says, ‘Fear not, for I am with you always.” (Isaiah 41:10).'”
