Carrie Underwood Reveals Christmas Traditions: ‘Joyful Time of Year’
By Movieguide® Contributor
While Carrie Underwood will spend much of December in Las Vegas for her residency, she explained how she got into the Christmas spirit before leaving her Nashville home and the traditions she looks forward to once she returns.
“My Christmas decorating schedule honestly depends on my schedule, so this year, I decorated before Thanksgiving, which is not really something that I would like to do,” she explained. “I think the ideal time to decorate for Christmas is the weekend right after Thanksgiving.”
“For me, growing up, Christmas was always just comforting. We always had the same stockings and the same tree and the same decorations, and we would always decorate the weekend right after Thanksgiving,” Underwood told WKML radio.
Underwood keeps this tradition alive by getting a tree with her family at the end of November to kick off Christmastime.
“We were an artificial tree family growing up,” she said. “It was easier, but now, in our own home, we do the real tree thing, and we try to make that a bit of a tradition. We go, and we pick it out. The boys have some say in which one we get, and they feel some ownership, and we all decorate it together and, of course, have Christmas music playing in the house.”
“Now that we’re adults and have kids, we can go to the Christmas tree farm, and we can walk around, and we can pick out which one and ask Isaiah, ‘Which one do you think?’ Just like that, making memories. It’s just a joyful time of year,” Underwood added.
Along with getting a real Christmas tree every year, the country singer’s family celebrates other traditions, including matching pajamas for the entire family and making special cookies.
“For the past few years, we all get matching PJs,” Underwood shared. “Either we get them, or somebody else gifts them to us, and we all match – my husband, myself, my sons, and our dogs. And getting my German shepherd into a Christmas sweater is no easy feat, I will tell you that.”
“I make cookies that were my husband’s grandmother that my kids call Gigi’s recipe. It’s her recipe, her ginger snap cookies; we make those, and it’s super sweet,” she added. “Isaiah loves to make Gigi’s cookies because he still remembers her a little bit. So, it’s something special we get to do.”

Carrie Underwood wants to put God at the forefront of her upcoming Christmas album.
“For me, it’s more important than ever to focus on the true meaning of Christmas in a project like this,” she said. “Even though it has been a tough year for all of us, sometimes I feel like the greatest realizations can be inspired by the most difficult times, and make us more grateful for the things we do have and for what truly matters.”
The mother of two released the full track list, and it features several holiday songs that honor God, as well as a song that features her 5-year-old son, Isaiah.
Classics like “Silent Night,” “O Come All Ye Faithful,” “Away in a Manger,” and “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee” are just some of the songs on the new album.
