Cartoon Network’s WE BABY BEARS Introduces They/Them Pronouns

By Movieguide® Contributor

Animated kid’s series WE BABY BEARS introduces nonbinary characters as the show discusses pronouns in an upcoming episode.

The show is commemorating pride month in what is described as an LGBTQ+ inclusive episode. Disturbingly, the show’s target audience is those aged 6 and older, who have no need to learn about gender pronouns.

The show introduces the topic by inviting in new characters.

One character says, “I am the great Winnifred, she/her. Actor extraordinaire.”

“Our crew also has a new addition,” another bear adds. “Meet box! They use they/them pronouns and they make an exceptionally good quiche!” Another character, Polly the Captain, adds, “I use they/them pronouns as well!”

While the decision to introduce nonbinary characters on the show has received harsh backlash, the executives on the show stand by their decision.

“During the production of WE BABY BEARS, a few crew members came out with they/them pronouns, and we felt that it was important to reflect that in the show,” stated Cartoon Network. “Our show team values representation because it’s something everybody on the show deeply cares about.”

Cartoon Network’s continued support of this episode serves as a reminder that parents need to vet the content that their children are watching. Not all children’s media teaches moral and biblical values. It’s also a reminder of the importance of raising media-wise children who understand that it is important to think about the media they are consuming.

Movieguide® previously reported on raising media wise kids:

With the explosion of children’s content on streaming sites and social media platforms, it is more important than ever for kids to be taught how to be wise about the media they consume.

Even within the last decade, kids’ options were relatively limited when it came to the media they consumed. There were only a handful of TV channels dedicated to children’s shows and streaming sites were not yet big enough to regularly produce media for them.

However, as streaming has continued to eclipse cable TV, children now have an almost endless stream of media available to them at all times. From shows to movies to YouTube channels starring kids their own age, there is no shortage to the content they have available at their fingertips.

Because of the large audiences found in children’s media, nearly every production company has launched multiple projects into the space. The projects that find success have the potential to bring in millions, and sometimes billions of dollars. This year, THE SUPER MARIO MOVIE is the highest-grossing movie so far, grossing over $1 billion. The live-action THE LITTLE MERMAID and PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH also currently rank among the top ten for this year’s domestic box office.

The flood of entertainment choices places a burden on parents to teach their kids how to wisely choose the media they consume. Not all shows are created equal, and some production companies produce immoral, provocative content rather than content that teaches biblical principles.
