CeCe Winans Shares First Church Solo, Says It’s An ‘Honor to Sing the Good News’

CeCe Winans and Jennifer Hudson recently revealed the songs they sang for their first church solos.

“I’ve got to ask you, what was your first solo in church? Because my first solo was ‘Must Jesus Bear The Cross Alone,’ and I was 7,” Hudson started, adding, “I forgot the words and the congregation had to help me out!”

Winans shared that her first church solo song was “Fill My Cup, Lord,” which she sang when she was 8 years old.

Hudson then asked Winans what it feels like to be one of the biggest names in gospel music.

“You never really think about even think about that,” she replied. “You think about, first of all, the honor to sing the good news, to spread hope, to spread love. And, you know, it started with that little girl, and one door continued to open before the next…you turn around, and it’s like — it’s nobody but God that has helped you to that.”

Winans continued, “It’s amazing to me, when we just give God what He’s given us, we give it back to Him, and to see what He can do with it is amazing.”

Winans is currently on tour, performing hits from her latest album, “More Than This.”

“It’s the power of God,” she told Forbes of the album. “My faith is built on the cross and when you realize the love of God is the reason you breathe every day, these are not just songs to me. I want people to be entertained, we want to have fun, and we do, but this is my life. It’s my lifeline. And when we invite the Holy Spirit to come in, we’re believing he’s going to come, and it’s going to be a supernatural experience.”

Winans spoke further about the making of “More Than This” in a recent interview with Woman’s World.

“It was a powerful worship experience and that was my first live record I ever did,” she said. “But we couldn’t have people then because it was recorded during the pandemic. Other people have done live records before and had audiences singing, but for me, it was my first time, and to capture the audience, it makes this album, to me, more powerful than my last one…[making the album] was just heavenly to me.”

Movieguide® previously reported on the album:

Winans recently released “More Than This,” a 13-track live album recorded in Nashville.

Forbes reported that Winans invited worship teams from across the country to join the live recording.

“So, we had singers in the audience,” she said, “and not just singers, but people who sing these songs weekly. And I’m just going to tell you, that was a highlight for me. When I heard those voices singing along with me, it was like being in heaven. It made it all so special.”
