Chris Pratt may be known for starring in films like GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and THE GARFIELD MOVIE, but to him, his faith in God is more important than another box office hit.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Pratt explained Jesus met him when he was young, lost and living on a beach in Hawai.

“I was sitting outside a grocery store — we’d convinced someone to go in and buy us beer. This is Maui. And a guy named Henry came up and recognized something in me that needed to be saved,” the actor recalled. “He asked what I was doing that night, and I was honest. I said, ‘My friend’s inside buying me alcohol.’”

Henry began asking questions about Pratt’s intentions for the evening.

“‘You going to go party?’ he asked. ‘Yeah.’ ‘Drink and do drugs? Meet girls, fornication?’ I was like, ‘I hope so,’” Pratt admitted.

He continued, “I was charmed by this guy, don’t know why. He was an Asian dude, maybe Hawaiian, in his 40s. It should’ve made me nervous but didn’t. I said, ‘Why are you asking?’”

Then, Henry said something that stunned Pratt and changed the course of his life.

“He said, ‘Jesus told me to talk to you…’ At that moment I was like, I think I have to go with this guy. He took me to church. Over the next few days, I surprised my friends by declaring that I was going to change my life,” he explained.

Today Pratt is open about his faith. Recently he partnered with the prayer app Hallow in preparation for Easter. In an Instagram post, he said, “Super excited about my partnership with the @hallowapp 🙏. I’ll be joining my buddy @markwahlberg in helping everyone stay prayed up until Easter with weekly fasting challenges as part of Hallow’s Pray40 Challenge: The Way.”

At a GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL 3 screening event that Movieguide® attended, Pratt spoke about why he doesn’t shy away from talking about Jesus. “That’s nothing new, that’s nothing new, you know,” he said regarding the hate he has received. He then quoted scripture, “‘If I was of this world, they would love me just like that but as it is, I’ve chosen out of this world.’ That’s John 15: 18 through 20.”

That exact passage reads, “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.”

The verse continues, “Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.”

Pratt added, “That’s the way it is, nothing new, 2,000 years ago they hated him, too.”

Pratt’s testimony is a reminder that no matter how much we have or how well known we are, faith in Jesus is all that matters.
