Christ Pratt Tells Fans There Won’t Be More MARIO Movies Until the WGA Strike Ends

Despite the success of THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE, lead voice actor, Chis Pratt is firm that talks of a sequel will not start until the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike is finished.

“We’re in the midst of this writers’ strike, and so everything has been paused and [put] on hold for the right reasons,” Pratt said. “I really do support the WGA and our writers. When the negotiations have been completed, and the writers feel comfortable moving forward, then it’ll be time to start talking about what’s next for that.”

The WGA is striking for increased job security. The WGA is demanding that production companies keep AI out of the writer’s room in order to stave off job replacement from the emerging technology.

Meanwhile, THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE, which was released on April 5th, has skyrocketed to being the second highest-grossing animated movie in box office history, trailing only FROZEN II.

Given the unexpected, worldwide success, it is likely that Nintendo and Illumination will join together again to create sequels and spinoffs. While rumors as to where Nintendo will take its IPs have already started to spread, no work will officially begin until the WGA strike is complete.

Japan displayed the film across 776 screens to reach a gigantic $14.5 million which resulted in the biggest debut weekend for an animated film in Universal history. To top it all off, the film scored an additional biggest Saturday box office also in Universal history.

SUPER MARIO BROS MOVIES already sailed to the No. 1 released film of 2023 in the world. However, reaching $1 billion means that the film is the biggest animated title in the world since 2019. In addition, the film is Universal’s No. 3 biggest animated creations of all time sitting just behind MINIONS and DESPICABLE ME 3.
