Christian NFL Star Patrick Mahomes Makes Times’ 100 Most Influential People List

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, known for his skill on the field and his Christian faith, landed on Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People of 2023” list.

“All these young players around the country are trying to imitate his sidearm throws and incredible plays. But I hope they know he’s also an incredibly hard worker. He appreciates the cerebral part of the game. And he understands his platform, as the MVP quarterback of the Super Bowl–winning team,” Time reported.

In addition to his incredible talent, Mahomes uses his platform to speak on something bigger than himself.

“My Christian faith plays a role in everything that I do,” he said prior to the Super Bowl last season. “I always ask God to lead me in the right direction and let me be who I am for His name. So it has a role in everything that I do. Obviously we’ll be on that huge stage in the Super Bowl that He’s given me, and I want to make sure I’m glorifying Him while I do it.”

“I feel like I’ve grown in my faith these last few years and I think that’s given me more sense of who I am and why I play the game,” Mahomes added. “It just kind of relieves the pressure of playing a football game because I know that I’m on that football field to glorify Him before everything. So it’s not about winning or losing. It’s about going out there and being the best that I can in His name.”

One piece of scripture that has resonated with the quarterback is Acts 20:7-12:

On the first day of the week, we gathered with the local believers to share in the Lord’s Supper. Paul was preaching to them, and since he was leaving the next day, he kept talking until midnight. The upstairs room where we met was lighted with many flickering lamps. As Paul spoke on and on, a young man named Eutychus, sitting on the windowsill, became very drowsy. Finally, he fell sound asleep and dropped three stories to his death below. Paul went down, bent over him, and took him into his arms. “Don’t worry,” he said, “he’s alive!” Then they all went back upstairs, shared in the Lord’s Supper, and ate together. Paul continued talking to them until dawn, and then he left. Meanwhile, the young man was taken home alive and well, and everyone was greatly relieved.

“It’s about being half in and half out on God. That’s the interpretation I took from it, and how you can’t be half in and half out,” Mahomes said of his tattoo he got inspired by Acts 20. “So that was the Bible verse that kind of stuck with me, that told me that I needed to be fully in.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Mahomes prior to Super Bowl LVII:

The Chiefs quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, threw for 326 passing yards and two touchdowns all on an injured ankle.

“I wanna thank God, man. He healed my body this week,” he told CBS’s Tracy Wolfson of the high-ankle injury he suffered in the Chief’s victory over Jacksonville a week prior. “To battle through that, He gave me the strength to be out here.”
