Christian Rapper Tackles Giving Mental Health Struggles to Jesus
By Movieguide® Contributor
Christian rapper KB recently opened up about the importance of taking care of your mental health in a discussion with Relevant Magazine.
He supports therapy and sees the value of having a therapist in your life to navigate personal struggles and bring those things to Jesus.
“There are things that I went through — let’s call them daddy wounds — that I would have thought that I was above, especially being a father. I started feeling like, ‘I don’t need a father, I am a father.’ But there’s still a child inside of you that went through something that is still animating,” KB explained. “Many of the ways you feel, or some of the actions you might find yourself kind of carrying out, those things need to be brought to the feet of Jesus. But they don’t get there unless we talk about them. So, I think that’s one of the main ways where I get vulnerable about the limitations and the challenges of my story.”
KB said that it’s a challenge to realize he isn’t in control and can’t put his confidence in his abilities.
“I think that a continual kind of challenge for me is not becoming over-reliant on my abilities — my ability to be spiritual, my ability to be insightful, my ability to be smart or to read and articulate what they’re saying,” he said. “Even my ability to manage relationships and manage people. It’s very easy to get very confident in those things and then find that you are not in control.”

KB recognizes the mental health crisis that ravages people.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness shared some staggering statistics: “1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year, 1 in 20 U.S. adults experience serious mental illness each year, 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year, 50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24, Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10-14.”
The rapper wishes that mental health care was more accessible to everyone, and he realizes how fortunate he is to receive this kind of support.
“If your insurance doesn’t pay that, you’re out of pocket. It’s expensive. And I realize that I don’t know where I would be without those things, but there’s so many people who are walking through this stuff alone. They’re hurting like anyone else would be. So, as I’m talking about these things, I’m having to do with my hat in hand and seeing that the Lord has been very, very gracious to allow me these resources.”
He continued, “I want to be an advocate for churches, for our government, for insurance companies, to see the seriousness of being able to support doctors of the soul, as well as doctors of the body.”
KB’s latest album, “His Glory Alone 2,” dove into his mental health struggles.
“I never talked about my life like this on a record,” KB said of the album. “When you listen to it, I hope you hear and understand the passion of a broken, but committed man. Maybe you can see yourself in this man. That’s who I am. I’m a son whose wounds are being healed as a father. I’m a husband who is serious about leading in my household.”
